• 5 Ultimate Monster Mascots of Final Fantasy

Everyone knows the obvious mascot of Final Fantasy is the Moogle or Chocobo - even though many of you will argue otherwise. There are so many other monsters that pop up throughout the series and have become total fan favourites. Here is a quick run down of a few of my favourite mascot monsters of Final Fantasy!

Ochu is a real pain in the ass. He's like Malboro's less annoying, but still frickin' annoying cousin. He looks a lot like Audrey Junior from Little Shop of Horrors, and he probably has an even bigger appetite too. Why is Ochu such a pain? Well, because he does not give a damn about putting you to sleep in battle, poisoning you, or just covering you with his stinky gasses. Why does he make my list though? Well, because he is quite cute with his little flower petal skirt. He's like a viciously overgrown hula dancer...

What is Flan? Is he a dessert or a foe? Flans are an oddity. Just what are they really? I've always thought they look like a blob of jelly. I love their little angry expressions and how they seem to melt away when defeated. Final Fantasy XIII-2 gave the Flan a whole new appearance though which really jiggled them from a jelly to.... a tomato? His Royal Ripeness is a towering inferno of tomato-ey gooey glob who is trying to take over - calling forth his miniflan spawn to join him. It was quite strange to see such an icon of Final Fantasy completely re-imagined as what would probably be an Italian chef's dream (probably nightmare...) Flan is kind of a cutey though, with his ridiculous pudding body and that cranky little face!

Roll up, roll up, it's the captain of the douche squad, Malboro. Probably the most annoying monster on the list of monster mascots. He is in dire need of some breath mints and pruning, but he certainly has some adorableness about him. Well, I mean... kind of. I guess what I'm trying to say is it wouldn't feel like Final Fantasy without being absolutely annihilated occasionally by a Malboro. They're scary, stinky, and fantastic, not to mention such an icon of the series.

Like Malboro, Cactuars are such a huge, huge part of Final Fantasy. They're odd little things. They don't really do much but they're super speedy and hard to hit. Their appearance and expression hasn't changed a bit throughout the series which makes them so recognisable. The only time their design has been changed was for Final Fantasy XI and XII, which must have been pretty unpopular because they returned to that classic appearance for Final Fantasy XIII - in GIANT form too! They're pretty tough little guys with their 1000 Needles attack. Be sure not to piss them off!

The ultimate mascot monster for me has to be the beautiful Behemoth. Some people may think he looks terrifyingly scary, but I think he's probably just misunderstood! With the vibrant purple fur, ridiculously over sized horns, and a snarly expression, he's probably given even Sephiroth nightmares. But as a dog and cat lover, there's something really lovely about Behemoth which makes me able to see past the scary-ness and see that beneath it all is a big fluffy pet who probably just needs a snuggle...

So tell me EoFF, who are your favourite recurring monsters of Final Fantasy? Do you enjoy seeing some monsters pop up again and again, or do you prefer new and exciting beasts to slay? Join in with the chat and let me know in the comments below!

      Happy 100th article Locky!

That screenshot with the Water Flan makes me flinch slightly because of what's going to happen next. Tidus is by himself with only 46 HP remaining, and the Flan is in the middle of casting a water spell.

That isn't going to end well for him, really.

I never thought of the Behemoth as a "mascot monster", but that's a good one.

Others who could've been considered: Tonberry (Bubba wants a word w/ you), Couerl, Goblin, Sahagin, & Dragons. The last three may be a bit more generic, though.

I'm reminded of our time fighting Ochu's in FFXIV, Locky. Running around with you and Lone Wolf Leonhart was one of my favorite times in the short time I played that game.

Anyways, Behemoths are great! This article is great!

I love the iconic monsters and I'm always interested to see the slight redesigns with each installment of the series. Cactuars should stay exactly the way they are though.

Other contenders for the list are Tonberry and Bomb.

I have fond memories of kicking Malboro's ass on Crystal Chronicles. Cactuars makes me smile every time I see him.

Yah bombs are a good reoccurring one. They are almost always in it.
