• Practical Final Fantasy Abilities

The Final Fantasy series is well known for its characters and their outrageous abilities. Some of these abilities are extravagant, such as Knights of the Round. Others are more subdued, such as the Lamp spell that cures Dark in the original Final Fantasy. Which abilities from this series would be practical in real life situations?

    Teleport

Teleport from Final Fantasy Tactics is not only one of the most useful abilities in the game, but also could be useful in real life situations. You can acquire the ability to Teleport within a reasonable range by gaining 600 JP as a Time Mage. Imagine not ever having to wait to cross the street? How about never having to drive through Rush Hour traffic, or wait forever for Public Transportation? With the Teleportation ability, getting to where you need to go could be a breeze!

    Stop

Ever have a big project to do on a short notice? Of course you have! Well, even if you haven’t, imagine finding yourself in such a situation. The thing you would want most is more time to finish what has to be done. Well, with the Stop spell, you’d be able to freeze time, giving yourself enough time until the spell wears off to finish everything you need to do. Need to go grocery shopping before picking up the kids from school? Oh my god, its 3:25 and you only have 15 more minutes before you need to pick them up! Well, with Stop, you can freeze those little munchkins in Art class while you stock up on Beefaroni, then make a bee-line to the school before the spell wears off.

    Waterja

How’s the weather in Arizona? Hot and arid! Well, with Waterja, you can say goodbye to the dry with a snap of your fingers. The Governor of California says you can’t water your grass because of the drought? Well, you could flood the streets in an instant, saving farms as well as people’s lives. Sally Struthers may want you to send money to feed the children of Africa, but you can do better by rejuvenating the soil so their parents could grow enough crops to not only feed their families (which, in all honesty, would be confiscated by the warlords, who’ll sell those crops to American corporations leaving the people in destitute, but that’s another matter).

    Silence

Ever want to shut your mother-in-law, little sibling, or teacher/boss up? Well then, Silence is the spell for you! Are you tired of your dad telling you to get a job? Are you sick of your mom nagging you to be more like Lloyd Braun? With a simple chant, you can shut them the hell up in no time. No more “Take out the trash!” Say goodbye to hearing your wife screech at you about… whatever that is, who’s listening anyway?

All of these abilities would be tremendously valuable in the real world. What other spells/abilities do you think would be useful in real life? Which of these would you like at your disposal? The Final Fantasy series is well known for its characters and their outrageous abilities. I prefer to subject those who have wronged me to prolonged pestilence.

      So Hades for me.

Unfortunately Teleport (FFT style) only really works on things within close walking distance.

I think I am going to go with Haste. The ability to everything just that much faster.

Regen, an on-demand healing factor will make dealing with accidents and injuries so much easier. Five months to heal a fractured bone? Lets halve the time with a bit of magic. Granted Cure is pretty high up there as well, but instant healing also leaves many opportunities for backlash.

Steal, manipulate, deathblow, shadow image, vanish, haste, slow, mug, lightning, fire, ice, water...

You could find a practical use for more or less every single ability if you just tried.

I'd pick Esuna without a second thought. I mean come on, it cures Blindness, Silence, Confusion, Berserk, Poison, the list goes on. Hell in FFV it even cures Old! Now wouldn't that be crazy?

Honorable mention to Resist which prevents such ailments pre-emptively, but since it also prevents curing them if you unwittingly already have them it's a bit too much of a double-edged sword for me.

No one's saying you have to pick one.

Pretty funny article - great job, Angus!
Many FF abilities would work well in real life, because they're pretty useful in the game itself. :P
I love being versatile, because limiting myself to one option is a bad thing, isn't it? :P

I would very much like the ability to Jump in real life battle situations. I guess you'd need to be in some trees.....or use a hot air balloon.
