• XV will have two different battle systems!

You heard that right! Some of the developers for Final Fantasy XV took time to answer a few questions on the official Final Fantasy XV forums via the Community Manager Dan Seto. They answered some questions about the battle system, the city of Altissia, and how the warp system works! Check them out!

HOW WILL THE DIFFICULTY MODES COMPARE IN TERMS OF XP GAIN, ENEMY STATS, DAMAGE AND A.I?
The equivalent to difficulty level settings in FFXV is a system where you can switch between different battle modes. By having this ability to switch modes, we want to make it so that both players who like action oriented, technical gameplay and also those who want to fight at a slower, more relaxed pace can all enjoy the combat in their own style. This switching system is a key part of the gameplay that we decided to introduce based on the feedback we received from the Episode Duscae demo. We will go into more detail about the system closer to the game’s launch so stay tuned for more information.

Respondent: Lead Game Designer Takizawa Masashi
HOW MUCH OF THE BIG CITIES LIKE ALTISSIA/INSOMNIA WILL WE BE ABLE TO EXPLORE?
I can tell everyone a little about Altissia at this time.

Altissia has many and varied locations, such as multiple cafes, ship-bourne market places and parks etc. The city is of a considerable scale, to the extent that even the developers sometimes get lost there!

The player is free to take a leisurely walk around the complex maze of streets, or ride the gondola to see the sights and there is also added enjoyment to be had looking for restaurants to visit!
You are bound to encounter some unique characters when exploring the city streets.

So we have created lots of different things to enjoy in Altissia and hope everyone is looking forward to visiting!

    Respondent: Planner Ishikawa Tomonori
WILL LARGE BUILDINGS HAVE MULTIPLE WARP POINTS TO ALLOW NOCTIS TO SCALE AND EXPLORE ROOFTOPS?

    Why of course they will!

The warp ability that lets you teleport instantly to high up locations is a vital part of FFXV’s battle system. The ability to use multiple warp points in a strategic manner is especially prevalent in the game’s large scale battles over urban terrain. It is not just the buildings though, and we have also created exciting aerial battles with flying foes and gigantic boss enemies, so watch out for those.

Respondent: Lead Level Designer Terada Takefumi
So there you have it! We'll be getting a fast and a slow-paced battle system. Altissia is going to be full of experiences, and we'll be able to jump everywhere in aerial battles!

Have you played the demo? Would a slow-paced battle system have worked for you? Anyone excited about a huge city to explore? And flying battles?! Whaaaat?

I hope the second system is like Dragon Age Inquisition where you go into a tactical mode and are able to plan each party member's actions and control the flow of battle. I hope it's not just some 'easy mode' where you hit one or two buttons and your party kills everything for you.

I'd love to control the flow of battle. I'm not the best at fast-paced combat, and I enjoy slower, tactical pauses. So that's a good addition, I think.

Kinda reminds me of the Active/Wait Mode switch in many games, but it sounds like a lot more than that.

Aww man, I need to go back and play the demo again. I haven't touched it since the update.

Definitely a fan of the two separate battle systems! I'll probably opt for the slower, tactical one too as that is the Final Fantasy I know and love. Listen to them talk about Altissia as well has me excited!

I'm not taking credit for the two different battle systems, but i kinda am, because i filled out that survey and said i would love a turn-based battle system option, or at least something that would allow strategic planning and didn't require quick reflexes to win battles. I guess other people felt the same way enough that they're doing it.

Thank you for being the hero we deserve.

I'm glad they're doing this. I'm just wondering how good it will be if they haven't had a long time to fine tune and test it - this is the first we've heard of it, right? Still, glad they do listen to feedback!

side note: It's funny when you see an article featuring quotes from a person you know personally irl (yes I know Dan Seto, I worked with him for years).

On topic: I've not played XV yet. However, Psy described the combat as similar to Kingdom Hearts in a way. I'm not sure I personally would want to play a final fantasy game with a Kingdom Hearts style combat system so the option of a slower "easy" mode combat may just appeal to me on an asthetic level.

While it's nice to hear, I'd like to see it in action (hue, hue, punny) before getting too excited.

This is all sounding good. Not long until March!

I hope this means we'll get action gameplay that is better than what it sounded (and felt) like they were aiming for, rather than trying for a single action system that was also playable by people who don't like action all that much. Neutering an action system to be more inclusive for those who don't like them at all just kills the fun of a more purebred action system.

Imagine if the second system is just auto-battle. That would reduce the difficulty for those who suck at action games xD

but it also wouldn't be fun for those who dislike action games.
