• FFXV Turning on the Waterworks

Here's hoping Final Fantasy XV will make you cry. Not with disappointment and anger at money wasted, but rather at the sadness and beauty of the storytelling. At least, that's what Square Enix wants to happen when you play the latest numbered entry to the FF series later this year.

Director Hajime Tabata says "I want to create a very emotional ending to the game and want to make as many people cry as possible. You're spending so many hours playing the game, so when I finish a game and it ends on a sour note and it doesn't move me, it gets me disappointed. At least make me cry or give me some emotion! I want to give a moving ending for the consumers who invest so much time."

It is their hope to create a similar impact to what they did way back with Final Fantasy VII, something that is a strong motivator for the team. Release date is expected to be announced later this month. Are you ready to shed some tears?

That's pretty bold claim. VII took the gaming world by storm. To try to compare itself to it, well that's going to be a big task.

I like that they are saying it'll be emotional though, it means they really put a lot of effort into making it more than just a cookie cutter story. They're going in hard on their story telling.

Dang I was about to write this before I went to work. I figured someone would beat me to it.

The scenario writer for FFXV is the same guy who did FFX.

I'd say Luna has better odds than Noctis.

Pretty sure that means the end is going to say "To be continued in Final Fantasy XIII-4" and he means those will cry who hated XIII as well as those who love the trilogy will cry tears of joy.

It's probably going to be fans crying tears of being duped again by one of Nojima's asinine plots.

Cue Aerith's death in the remake being interrupted by jpop music as Aerith gives lifted up into the sky and waves to a smiling Zack Fair as feathers fall to the ground as Cloud looks up in amazement.

Sounds like a silly thing to be excited about but I'm glad they're going for emotional depth with the characters in this game.

I haven't cared about any of the FF characters since FFX, which came out 15 years ago! (although I guess I'd include Zach in Crisis Core maybe)

Is it bad that I don't really care when they die right at the end? Like, I'm more inclined to be devastated by a death if it's mid-game. Because then you have to keep fighting.

They better be tears of happiness. I don't want to play a long game only for the end of the world to happen (looking at you here, FFXIII-2 )

Even when FF was good I never cried at it. The stories are good and have emotional moments but the style of delivery has muted the emotional impact.

This is going to be glorious.

Seriously though X really had some great moments. If they can do half as good a job as they did there it'll be a story to look forward to.

Well The Last of Us was the last game to make me shed a tear and it was absolutely awesome, so if they do it right then I'm all for it.

I don't think a video game ever made me cry, honestly. Sure, I've felt sad when Aerith died and stuff, but I never really cried. So I'm not sure if XV is going to change that.
