Today, is the 26th anniversary of the US release of the original Final Fantasy on the Nintendo Entertainment System. It’s hard to believe that the game has been around so long, and in so many incarnations. Since the original release in December 1987 in Japan, there’s been over a dozen re-releases, starting with the MSX release in 1989, which improved the sound and colorization. The US release was pretty faithful to the Famicom version, albeit with a single save file on battery (the MSX version saved files on blank floppy disks, so you could store as many as you wanted), and with more technical limitations. There was, as well, Nintendo of America’s censorship, which prohibited use of religious iconography (such as churches, crosses, etc.). Despite all of that, the NES version of Final Fantasy was a very solid game. ...

World of Final Fantasy will be out this October just a month after Final Fantasy XV and Square Enix has some more footage and details about this upcoming spinoff.

PlayStation Access has managed to play a new demo of the game focusing on the game's battle system. In this footage we can see familiar enemies such as Bombs, Tonberries, and Mandragoras. You can catch monsters ala Pokemon by wittling their health to a certain point and imprisoning them. Monsters or mirages as they're called in this game, can be stacked on your character's head to grant them abilities in battle like two fire monsters can grant you access to the Firaja spell. These mirages can even evolve just like Pokemon and have their own skill tree.

Summons in this game seem to have been replaced by the medal system in which you can summon characters from the mainline series to perform an attack. In this demo we can see Tidus from Final Fantasy X being called forth to perform his best Overdrive Blitz Ace. The animation can be quite ...

Since it's re-release in 2013, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (now Heavensward) has managed to keep players engaged with consistently updated and new content. It's been having an amazing run, garnering with rave reviews across the board and a strong and rising subscription base. The latest patch, titled 'Revenge of the Horde' was released just last month the game and has given the game yet another shake up with new content to be cleared. Some of the content has forced strong opinions from me. Not all of them are good... ...

Today, Square-Enix revealed the second villain to appear in their new arcade game: Final Fantasy's Joker expy Kefka Palazzo has entered the scene with a new debut trailer showing off his new spells and animations.

While not much can be said at this point on changes that have occurred with his fighting style, one interesting thing to note about the video is that Kefka's video shows us a bit more of the Chaos version of FFVI's Narshe fields, which transforms into the Ruined World version of the setting with dying grass and desertification. No other news on gameplay changes has been confirmed yet. ...

There's a reason the term "sophomore slump" exists. The first entry in a series always brings a certain degree of expectation to the table that a sequel should logically meet and even surpass. Needless to say, doing so is very hard. Although, video games are a unique case. Due to their interactive nature, most sequels are actually capable of being objectively better than their predecessors. Is Bravely Second an example of this or does it fall flat compared to Bravely Default? ...

In a recent Mistwalker broadcast, Hironobu Sakaguchi announced that he's planning on opening a new development studio. For right now he's thinking about Dawnwalker as the name and plans to open the studio in the Roppongi section of Tokyo, Japan. He went on to state that his studio are going to recruit a lot of staff for this new development studio. Hironobu Sakaguchi was a former employee of Square Enix and created the Final Fantasy series. He made a recent appearance at Square's Final Fantasy XV Uncovered Event back in March.

Final Fantasy XV has been getting a lot of attention at this year's E3 and today we take another look at the game's airship. The game's airship was first revealed at the Uncovered event back in March, very briefly at the end of a trailer. Now, we have an extensive look at this transforming, flying car.

What's notable about this car is that it's different from the Regalia that's been shown in all the other videos. The carship has a more rounded build with sharp edges. Either the Regalia will be upgraded to fly through the game's campaign (likely by Cid) or the player will obtain a new version of the Regalia through the journey. We can see that the transition from ground to air is seamless and that the Regalia has parts that extends further when going airborne. The flight speed doesn't seem as fast compared to other FF games, but the other games were on a world map where the airship was larger than many structures on the map while this game has a more realistic scale by being open ...

Final Fantasy XV made an appearance at this year's Microsoft press conference today and the demonstration this time around is a boss fight against the summon Titan. This demo honestly made the game look very rough. The battle looked negatively chaotic with camera jump and angles that obscured your vision, not to mention the stream repeatedly took third person shots of the gameplay. When Noctis was clearly visible on screen, Ignus, and the others weren't. There wasn't indication of damage infliction either. This demo was not impressive and hopefully Square Enix has something better to show for the game this week.

What's Wrong with Final Fantasy X?

I've recently been playing the Final Fantasy X HD Remaster on the PlayStation Vita. And by “playing” I mean I've been vaguely paying attention in between save points before I go and do something else. I was much younger when I first played X and it was my third FF game total, following two games that would become two of my three favourite games ever. So could it hold up against these other Final Fantasy games that made me fall so deeply in love with them? The answer is actually yes. While I didn't love it quite as much, it's still a game I got swept up in and thoroughly enjoyed. Since then I have replayed it many times leading up to this latest playthrough. This time though, it seems the honeymoon phase is over. I still love Final Fantasy X in a familiar sort of way and I can appreciate it's good qualities, but after so many years together, it seems the negatives that I previously ignored are making themselves more apparent. Especially since I've been seeing other games from all genres, and seeing what else the world of gaming has to offer. Here are the things Final Fantasy X does that I don't remember it doing while we were dating. ...

The lovely folks at Square Enix have just treated us with a brand new trailer for Kingdom Hearts 2.8! In the trailer, we are presented with in-game footage of Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance in glorious HD, as well as Birth By Sleep 0.2: A Fragmentary Passage. The new graphics in the latter look particularly good, with Aqua's adventure using the new engine that will be the basis for Kingdom Hearts III.

The last segment of the trailer is devoted to Kingdom Hearts χ: Back Cover, the movie version of the recently released smartphone game that takes place at the very beginning of the Kingdom Hearts timeline. We get to hear a lot of cryptic conversations between new, hooded characters called the Foretellers, as well as some dramatic scenes. The film itself looks gorgeous and I can't wait to see what this is all about!

    But perhaps the most ...

Just before E3, Square Enix released a new trailer for the upcoming World of Final Fantasy (aka Final Fantasy: Chibi Quest). Here we see more of our favorite characters, including Quistis and Squall of Final Fantasy VIII, Cloud of Final Fantasy VII, and Tidus of Final Fantasy X pulling off his Blitz Ace Overdrive. It's also being reported that when people pre-order the "Day One" edition of the game, they will have access to a Sephiroth summon. The game is set for release in North America on October 25, and in Japan and Europe October 27 and 28 respectively on the Playstation 4 and Vita systems. ...
