Regular Gummi Ships
Gummi Ships are the reason why Sora and his allies are able to traverse the space between worlds in a relatively safe manner. Unfortunately, not everyone is a technical expert on the workings of large blocks of sugar, so a technical outline must be given. Every ship has a certain set of statistics, and each one may determine the success or failure of a mission. One can use the ships as they are, or even improve on them in the garage.
There's no captain without his ship. Unless he is a pilot. Blueprints appear after certain missions are accomplished and when the necessary materials for construction are provided.
These are the standard models provided by the game. Each ship's "level" is based on which mission the ship is best designed or has the capacity to complete in the best manner. The Highwind series are a group of balanced models, if minimalistic, while the Falcon series focuses on attack power, and the Invincible series focuses on high HP.

Special Gummi Ships
Special Models are an extension of the blueprints allowed by the game, and are rewards for not only finishing a mission, but exceeding expectations. More often than not, the blueprints obtained are novelties; references to Final Fantasy mainstays. At least one can be useless in style.

Teeny Gummi Ships
Every man needs his wingman, you know, to "take care" of the ugly Heartless. Only this time, one gets two of them; take care of them, they do more than one might think. Alternatively, a (or both) Teeny Ship(s) can be scrapped for cash by a Cost Converter. I hope those new loafers didn't hurt your pocket.
