You can get used to them, tbh. Took me a while as well, but at least in SMT IV you have 3rd person exploration
I wish more of the games had third person battles. It seems so small a thing, but it really does make it hard for me to play the mainline series. I was actually kind of enjoy Nocturne, but I didn't have a really great way to play it when I borrowed it (my TV and consoles were very inaccessible).
