*Hands over shiny pebble* Yeah I looked it up again too, plus a couple of other cow-related stories...However, it says in my mythopaedia that Egypt already had Hathor when Io and Zeus visited, and that Io's story is just one of many examples of 'cult sharing' where different cults take aspects from other cults and change them slighty.
Yeah, the Egyptians had Hathor first...But you've confused me. Are you talking about Io or Europa having something to do with a cow? I don't remember a cow ever being mentioned in Io's story, but I know there have been various mentions of sacrificial bulls, such as with King Minos and the birth of the Minotaur. I think Artemis or Demeter would have been in charge of cows, as Artemis is the virgin goddess of hunting and wild animals, whereas Demeter is goddess of crops, farming and the countryside. I don't think there was a specific goddess of cows, like with Hathor and the Egyptians, however, feel free to prove me wrong. If you do, you can have this shiny pebble I found outside Pizza Nut.
Oh yeah, Europa. She was borne away on Zeus, disguised as a white bull. He swam across the sea to the island of Crete (I think), where Europa bore him a child or two. I forget how many...*Reads back and is surprised at how intelligent she sounds* I don't think Europa was a Cow Goddess though. And Zeus took many forms when chasing mortal women, such as the swan when he wooed Leda, and a golden shower when he wooed Danae in her tower.
