Sorry to hear that, it's been a hectic couple of weeks for me and I've been dealing with family so I haven't even had time to look at the thread or even think of a story idea.
I think so too. As much as I really want to get into FFXII, I am afraid I’ll get burnt out too quick if I go in straight after an open world game. Plus, Bayonetta is a new game for me, and I should choose to play new games more often than just going back to old favorites. That, and the longer I thirst for XII, the better it’ll taste once I finally get to it Btw, I’ve set up the Valentines contest, but it isn’t really looking good this time around. Not a single comment, so I’m kinda we won’t get enough entries this time and I’ll have to cancel it.
Outside of a Quantity over Quality issue, DS2 surprisingly doesn't feel that different from DS1 actually. I think fans are just trying to come up with reasons to bitch cause lord knows the DS community is filled to the brim with "only the first one was good" mentality. Not everyone of course. Looking at DS3 in action on youtube, I would almost say it's safe to say the game is primarily made up of unused areas from Blooborne. The art direction and enemy types feel eerily similar and the combat seems way flashier than the more traditional games. We'll see. I can see the appeal of playing something short. My top choices besides DS3 are The Last Guardian and Fallout 4, and frankly a shorter experience is nudging TLG towards my playlist more at the moment. Maybe a different genre will do you good.
I have heard that DS3 is more similar to DS1and Bloodborne, as it was actually directed by Miyazaki again, so it might as well scratch that itch for you! Yeah, but while FFXII is the way you say it is, it’s still a time sink. So idk. I have wanted to play Bayonetta for some time too, so I guess I’ll just try that and see how it goes. Apparently it’s only ten hours long, which is really little compared to the other games I play.
Yeah, but XII is like the ideal console "open world" in which it doesn't bog you down as much with dumb quests and the zones are reasonable in size. Helping is the fact the game lets you speed up the time which actually makes the game go by faster. The really bad thing about my choice is that I kind of want to play Bloodborne or Demon's Souls again...
I think the reason I’m tired of Xenoblade and wasn’t of the Witcher 3 was that it just feels like I’m filling out numbers instead of actually organically exploring a world. Every continent has a percentage, every segment on the world map something to do to mark it as complete, there’s so much gear to craft, and every party member has an affinity level to fill. Sure, that’s great for someone who’s really into that, but it feels to me like it’s just more work - unlike the Witcher which just felt like it had so many stories to tell. So yeah, the Witcher has ruined gaming for me. Not to mention XCX relies even more heavily on the MMO formula than the first game. Meanwhile, while you ponder what to play next, I’m also having a dilemma. On the one hand, I’m really fired up for FFXII, but the. Again it’s alsi kind of an open world game and it’s big, while I want to focus a bit more on my writing, so maybe something less time consuming like Bayonetta would be better.
Yes and no. No, because we're not burnt out because the games are too long, yes because we're older now and can afford more games so we have to budget our times better. To be fair to DS2, I'm like 98% done with everything in the game, and the few pieces of loot and gear I would still like to have either involve jumping into NG+ or using an item to make the levels act like NG+, but that also means that when I get into NG+ the areas I used the item in will be NG++. As it stands, I only need to finish the final DLC, beat two optional bosses I'm likely way overleveled for since their part of the vanilla game and not the harder DLC, and beat the two final bosses. One of which I've actually beaten multiple times now due to how co-op works in these games. So yeah, there isn't a whole lot left to do outside of completing covenant stuff and at this point it will be easier to do so in NG+. My real debate at the moment is whether I want to jump straight in Dark Souls 3 after this or go back to an older PS4/3 game I've been putting off. Hell, I still need to finish Tactics Ogre.
Is this us just getting old?
Yeah, I'm getting to the burnout point in DS2 right now as well.
Thanks for the tips. I’ll keep them in mind, though I think I’m pretty set on the choices I made, as it’s kind of for the optimal compromise between balanced jobs and character-appropriate combos - for me at least. Meanwhile, when it comes to Xenoblade, I’ve decided I’m gonna try and focus on the story for the rest of the game, and maybe come back to the post game someday if I ever feel like it. Better to end it on a high note than just get tired of it. On the plus side, just got the flight module for my Skells!
