I mean I never got bored with Persona 5's battle theme, of anything, I was simply disappointed that they reused one of the more epic boss themes for a couple of battles. I don't know, for me Matsuda does better with his world and character moments than battle themes. Like none of his battle themes are necessarily bad or anything, but like Xenogears battle theme can't stand up to stronger tracks for me like The One who is Torn Apart, A Distant Promise, Flight, and The Treasure Which Cannot be Opened. It's the issue in all of the game's he composes for. Even Chrono Trigger's battle themes barring Battle with Magus, which subverts this since it's the guys character theme, are not as strong or memorable as the other tracks.
Yeah, JRPGs need more battle tracks. The only thing I’m dreading about Xenoblade X is the fact that Black Tar is the only normal battle theme. And I like Black Tar.
I feel my only issue with Xenogears battle theme is that it's the only one outside of a cutscene track playing in battle or the special final boss themes. With an 80+ hour RPG, it becomes a bit forgettable after awhile.
Also, I just noticed something very interesting about the Xenogears battle theme. I know a lot of people hate it for some reason, but I really dig it. When you listen to it, it gives you the impression of going in circles with a constant buildup of tension but no clear resolution. And this is done in typical Mitsuda, non-functional fashion - there is no tonic. The chords build tension but never get resolved. Pre-dominants become dominants which become pre-dominants again, and this really keeps you on your toes throughout because there really isn’t a moment where you can just take a moment to relax. It’s glorious.
Okay so I just watched the Millennium crossover episode and at the very end, Scully and Mulder finally got together. And I think they actually did a good job on this because the next episode is all about the paranormal mystery and nobody really mentions what’s happened, but you can see the subtle difference in how they y’all to each other. I think they were really worried they’d alienate the non-shipping fan base and ultimately, I think the approach they took really works.
That's fine, I'm still trying to recoup my mental faculty from RL events. I've been at a wedding for the past few days and wore me out.
I remember my mom watching both series religiously. I was also scared of both as a kid Working on a reply for you btw! Should have it ready by tomorrow
Millennium was okay, I think I only caught one or two episodes. Never really took to it like X-Files.
Yeah, I get that, but I feel like that’s all still there. Like, the season 6 finale/season 7 premiere three-parter was awesome with its ancient astronaut plot line coming in. Felt really fitting now that I’m playing Xenogears And really, up to season five, I agreed with you but with how endearing season six was, the progression to romance really feels natural. We watched one episode of Millennium and while it was cool, we decided we really wanna keep watching X-files, so we’ll leave that for another time
I think I stopped after season five. Honestly, I preferred the more professional relationship and kind of started losing interest once they really started bringing in a romance angle. I felt it detracted from what the show was really about: uncovering mysteries and investigating the paranormal.
