You just need a fishing rod and some bait to fish. It's actually really useful because the fish can be used as items. There are also fishmen in some ponds that trade you really good gear in exchange for fish you catch.

Masters are not one time events, in fact some of them have requirements you may not meet yet when you first find them. Have you enjoyed the fishing minigame yet?
I've noticed a few different ones already! I do check the walkthrough like I said for recommended level and the masters, but I always check after I miss the Masters so I hope I can go back :/ I'm mostly skimming though because I don't want any ~spoilers~ as I am quite enjoying the way the story is told.
Lol, well welcome to one of the best things about Breath of Fire. Once you acquire more genes, you can actually change Ryu into different types of dragons and so forth.

Nah not yet. I galnce at a walkthrough every now and then just to see Masters (who I keep missing) and recommended level and it says I'm leveled enough. Oh well!
