It is all too facile to dismiss comic actress Rosie O'Donnell as a Roseanne wannabe, simply because of her very slight physical and stylistic resemblance to the formerMrs. Tom Arnold. All too facile, and all too unfair, since O'Donnell is a highly individual talent on her own -- you don't win the Star Search competition five times by being an imitation of someone else. Since her network TV bow on Gimme a Break in 1986, O'Donnell has seldom been unemployed, and has been a frequent and hilarious visitor on the crowded talkshow circuit. Seemingly in every other comedy film produced between 1992 and 1994, Rosie O'Donnell has sparkled in A League of Their Own (1992) as an outspoken female ballplayer, in Sleepless in Seattle (1993) as Meg Ryan's sentimental best pal, and in The Flintstones (1993) as the one and only Betty Rubble (high-decibel giggle and all). It is hardly Rosie O'Donnell's fault that her star turn as a phony dominatrix in Exit to Eden (1994) sank without a trace; after all, the market for S&M slapstick comedies has always proven rather limited. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
