One mechanic gets introduced that makes things just a teeny bit more interesting. But yeah, I don't get the hype either. The third game kind of resolves the plot in a pretty okay way, but really, I've seen much, much better stuff done already, be it in an anime, a game, or a visual novel specifically. I sometimes wonder if the hype just stems from the fanbase's lack of exposure to much else. Also, I recommend you check out Danganronpa. It's Ace Attorney done right, IMO.
I don't find it actively bad just. Dull I guess. I'll try the second one some day and see if I like that one more
