My guy basically spends his time trying to figure out Bay's style and why it doesn't work so well from a film perspective. He literally says he did the episode because he feels people spend too much time talking about the good stuff people do and wanted to have an episode focused on what not to do.
Ill definitely give them a look. Speaking of Bay, Lindsay is actually in the middle of a multi-episode series on Bay's Transformers, analyzing it from the angle of auteur theory and a bunch of other movie theories She does have a case of bile fascination with Bay because he's so bad, and yet at the same time the badness and success combined make for something really fascinating.
I didn't mind the length, just thought it was weird she opened the video up with a critique of another person's opinion. Be like reading an IGN review for a game that has its first paragraph being a counter to Game Informer's review of the game is all. His videos mostly deal with editing but he points out some really cool elements about directors and films like you saw with the Chuck Jones video. I love his videos on Akira Kurosaawa and Movement, Satoshi Kon and his quick cuts, Speilberg and his Long Shots, Jackie Chan and physical comedy, as well as his critique about Michael Bay and his style of film making.
I mean, yeah, she goes on a tangent, it it's still a fairly academic one, so I still kind of appreciate it. She does exaggerate her opinion in her videos a bit, but it's mostly played up for comedy. She's easily my favorite YouTuber, and I particularly loved her video destroying the notion that Disney's Beauty and the Beast is about Stockholm Syndrome, and another one about Mel Brooks and satire, though it's a pretty long one. In general, she has this series called Loose Canon about the various iterations of specific characters throughout film, so I recommend looking at that as well, if you feel like it I'll take a look at some of his other videos! This one was very interesting, so I'm curious to see what else he talks about.
The three act video was pretty interesting, at least once you get past the first few minutes being a tangent on another critics assessment of writing structure. I still need to watch the music ones you sent. Glad you liked the video, it's one of my favorite series on YouTube actually and he has some great ones that really change how I look at some movies.
Watched the video, btw. It was very interesting and definitely something I've been thinking about myself (there's a part of me that actually wants to go to film school and be a director, but then I tell myself "you can't do EVERYTHING" ). The bit about how the designs need to reflect the character is pretty much what bothers me about modern anime where a character is designed to be appealing first and foremost (mostly in a sexual way), and then they just attach a character to it. On the channel I linked you the vid from there's also a video that deals with a similar topic - I think it was called designing the other or something? It's about designs for aliens throughout film and how their design is also a very important part of film language and can convey s lot of things to the viewer without saying anything.
Ooh that will looks cool, I'm writing a screenplay anyway so this video may come in handy.
I'll take a look! And here's a video on three-act structure that's also pretty interesting:
This guy does a great job and each of his videos touches on a different film technique. He even does one on Satoshi Kon.
Ooh, I'll check it out when I have some time, then! Film theory and cinematography are pretty fascinating topics. I've picked up some of it from Lindsay Ellis's videos, though hers are still mostly intended as comedic despite being thorough analyses as well.
