No, the books go WAAAAY back. They're like the quintessential Polish fantasy books. We actually adapted them before, with a semi-decent tv show and a terrible movie!
Nope, didn't know. I knew the books existed, but I never heard about them until a while after the first game, and they all used the logos and such, so I figured they were based on the games.

I was lucky to get a gift card to this game/press/music/book/lots of random stuff shop network that had this bundle that basically put all the games (plus the PC version of the board game) in a bundle at the price of just the third game. Add in some random discount and I think I've made the best gaming purchase deal in my lifetime. And yeah, it'll be some time till I get to them as well. I'm not completely done with all the books yet and I hate to go into an adaptation without knowing the source material.
