You don't need to wait until it's foggy to go back. When the fog comes that means that you're almost out of time, because when it lifts, then you know... I used to go as soon as someone got kidnapped, personally. The only exception is one of the later ones, because it automatically skips ahead by quite a long stetch once you finish that dungeon.
