"Between 1660 and 1812, the perception of Russia among the established powers of Europe was significantly altered. For much of the seventeenth century and the centuries prior, the commonly held attitude was that the people were uncivilised barbarians, and they were not considered a significant political, cultural or military force. Russia’s culture and political structure at the time owed more to the eastern influence of the Mongols or the religious traditions of the Byzantine Empire than to modern European ideas. By 1812, Russia was very much a part of Europe, having become more involved in the continent’s affairs over the preceding century and a half. The Russian Empire had absorbed many aspects of European culture, as well as much of its military expertise, and as a result the Russian monarchy and military came to be greatly respected by the powers of Europe. Indeed, in the year of 1812 the Russian army sent La Grande Armée of Napoleon into retreat, a key turning point in the Napoleonic Wars, and the history of Europe itself."
