I can wait Just as long as it does come out, I'll wait. I can be patient But yeah, I agree. The world is bleaker and the situation more dire, but ultimately, despite Shinji being in shock again, Asuka kinda hating him and Rei being a puppet that kinda wants to be human, at least Asuka brings them together. They actually do have each other now and they are not alone. Plus, Rei is still in Unit 01 somewhere, and Kaworu promised they'd see each other again (not to mention the fact that Kaworu was actually pretty unambiguously good throughout his screen time). There is certainly a lot more hope now, whereas in the original everyone was just trying to hold on to something that was never there to begin aith
The original was pretty dark as well since you were watching everything unravel at the seems and characters fell apart. While it wasn't exactly the end of the world like the films, you can tell Eva got darker by the last ten episodes. I feel the film really kept that atmosphere while taking the series into a new direction. While the world seems a bit more bleak, the film ends on a better note than the TV series was before the final two episodes, mostly by how the three "Children" are all together again; whereas the series had all three of them largely broken beyond repair and working separately. So that's an interesting twist which I hope to see get expanded in the fourth film. My issue with it taking so long is that the fourth film is allegedly on hiatus after the third film pretty much fell apart during it's production. Supposedly, Anno is directing next year's Godzilla film to get him back into a groove to finish the fourth film, but as it stands it won't be out until 2020 at the rate he works.
I actually think it feels darker now, what with the world being in a much worse situation, but at the same time, you can feel that it's no longer getting depressing because the author is breaking down - you can tell this is controled and stable, so even though we're theoretically moving into End of Evangelion territory right now, the whole thing just feels much more hopeful. I mean, there was a failed hope spot in the third movie, but at least Kaworu was probably one of the first people in the series to actually state that sonething can be done to make the world a better place again Of course, I'm still half expecting Rebuild to be a stealth sequel
What I love about it, is how the film still keeps the same atmosphere and scenario of the series from the post-Zeruiel fight. You can see them touching upon several of the later episodes still, so themtatically it's followed the series up until the films now.
I honestly think the wait is for the better. 3.33 looked way different in the teaser and I think it's the single best thing to come out of the entire series yet. So I'm okay with waiting for 4.0 for as long as I need for them to get their script polished just to the degree it needs to be. But I just love how everything we thought we knew was kinda just tossed out the window with this movie. I mean, 2.22 already deviated enough, but by that ending couldn't expect, well, that. And the atmosphere. My God, the atmosphere. One of the most striking-looking anime films, I think, and definitely a very visually original post-apocalypse, and that music is just divine.
I really enjoy the Rebuild series actually, more than I thought I would considering I was not a fan of the original Evangelion films (love the TV series). I actually just acquired 3.33 and watched it the other evening, I feel it was a great direction for the series and I'm excited for part 4, which is currently in development hell. My only beef with the films so far is their long ass development times. These films were suppose to be done by now.
I'm thinking he just told me what I wanted to here to get me to stop talking about it. I'm going to have some legal issues in the future I guess. Course I do have all of the original manuscripts as well, so it's not like he has evidence to say he helped me write it... Though I honestly just miss writing with him because he was a good foil to my ideas, and tended to steer me clear from more unoriginal concepts for the story. I'll keep working on it, but I still think he'll come around to my way of thinking eventually.
By the way, what are your thoughts on Rebuild of Evangelion? I've returned there with my thoughts as I listened to the amazing 3.33 soundtrack and skimmed TV Tropes to come back to it, and I was reminded just how much I loved the art direction of the third movie. I mean, even if people don't like the direction the movie went (and I know some didn't; I happened to adore it), visually it's quite phenomenal.
So how's convincing your friend coming along?
He should be helping me with Soul because that story was a collaboration between us to begin with. He created like half the characters in the story with me. We basically wrote in a notebook and passed it back and forth between classes back in high school.
