I actually went to the beach last week and didn't sunburn at all, shockingly. I think because I reapplied my sun screen so much I ran out of it at the end of the day xD but yeah, having Irish skin is not a good thing in a hot location...
Just be careful. The Australian sun appears to be rather more dangerous As an aside though, you are far too pale to be a beach-dweller, or at the very least, a far more sensible beach goer; a friend of mine went to the beach two or three days ago (time is a mystery to me at the moment) and is positively radiating from her sunburn.

My experience on the east coast was limited to Boston and then NY with my uncle who is Australian and DC with Baloki (UK), Laddy (TN?) and Proto (rather quiet spoken man and I forget the state outside DC like Maryland or something) so I have no idea how to compare either xD
