Hanukkah is celebrating the victory of the Maccabees against Antioucus the Syrian King who took over Israel 2000 years ago. After the war, the Jews went to the temple and when they tried to relight the eternal flame, had only enough oil for 1 day, but it lasted 8 days instead, hence Hannukkah is 8 days long. (Chanukah means redidication in Hebrew)
