I'm pretty sure it is. I think only the HP/MP algorithms got changed between ports.

Firion will pretty much be your healer and it's pretty good. Honestly when it comes to magic, it's best to have one character dedicated to it than multiple people. Shields are great for guest characters but you'll probably want to duel-wield. Maria should honestly go naked as most armor and weapons actually reduce the effectiveness of magic. Robes and staffs don't do it as much but no armor/weapons tends to be preferred unless it gives a really good stat boost.
Won't I get screwed over without a dedicated healer? Also, I'm not sure about this thing. Should I give Guy two axes? Are shields any good or should I give Firion two swords as well? Will Maria be more powerful magically with a staff?

Meh, I'm okay with this. So, you have any recommendations for my FFII party? Just started, taught Fire to Maria and Cure to Firion
Yep, he gets access to the best armor and weapons and he's the beefgate of the party. No magic I'm afraid.
What about my hero? It says he doesn't know any spells, but does that mean he's like a pure fighter?
