My objective wasn't to win. It was to cut down on Ulti's differential as much as possible. That's not a simple pass/fail. It's a gradient. I can improve at it, get better at it. It's something I can work towards. It made it much easier to bear the loss. I still tore into Ulti's team. I made progress there.

So, when it's a complete curb-stomping where one side dominates the entire time and it's not a close match, what's the epic feeling at the end?
It's this anticipation, you know? "What's going to happen next? Will this strategy work, or are they going to throw a curveball at me? Whoah! They almost got me! Oh trout, Vivillon of Doom is down! Wat do wat do!!!" And in the end, regardless of whether you win or loose, you're just left with the feeling: "Damn. That was EPIC."
What is the "thrill of the battle" anyway, except just being incredibly tense and nervous that you're going to lose? Competition exists because both sides want to win. That's the point.
