In BD I feel like the game is more balanced in that each job can basically stand alone. However, advanced strategies do involve a lot of builds on a party level. BD is actually one of the few RPGs I’ve played that maxing your level is pretty much mandatory to handle the late game and even that is just a start - if anything isn’t up to snuff, you’re dead lol
I have only played the demo of the original, so I can't say for sure. 4HoL has a very interesting plot that is simply hampered by some awkward game design. Especially since it pulls a bit of an FFXI and has a gameplay format designed heavily around cooperation among party dynamics. You can tell they were heavily aping the original FFIII in that regard.
I wouldn’t necessarily say it was lackluster. It had a lot going for it, especially with the new jobs that were definitely original. The problem is with the plotting and how the final act is clearly more or less what they wanted the game to be about as they finished the For the Sequel edition of the original release, only for the rest of the entire game to be a much more disjointed set of ideas that didn’t go that well together, plus the party dynamics weren’t nearly as fun, but that’s what you get for removing two fiery party members and replace them with friendly goops. I think the story perhaps needed more time in the oven, just a couple more rewrites and it could’ve been on par with the first game, or at least closer to it, so idk if this is just the case of a less talented writer or just a more rushed development. But hey a ton of people actually do prefer Second, so I wouldn’t say it’s exactly a disaster
That was indeed rather funny. Would make sense to me as well. Apparently the producer for the BD franchise has apologized for how lackluster Second was. It's also part of the reason why BD2 is set in an original world with a whole new cast.
This made me chuckle btw
I don’t know if you’re familiar with Steins;Gate, but they hired the writer that did that, and it shows. There’s a lot of weird temporal stuff going on, but on top of that there’s just some excellent character writing and world building. I know a lot of people complain about BD’s story, but I honestly think it’s incredibly clever. It’s a crying shame they didn’t get him for Second. They got the guy who worked on the novelization but it’s abundantly clear this dude doesn’t have nearly the talent the first guy had, even if the game still has its charm. I’m pretty sure the first dude is also not coming back for II, so that’s a bit sad but I guess I still want to play it. At least they got Revo to do the music agsin
I know BD allowed you to fight the big bads from 4 Heroes of Light. That game is so weird, like I want to talk about it but I don't think anyone but Del played the game on this forum. It's so weird cause its brilliant and stupid at the same time. I imagine from what little I know of BD's plot that it seems like the team probably re-used a few ideas from 4HoL.
Plus I am curious what you’ll think of a more modern take on FFIII/V. It’s apparently got a good few nods to 4 Heroes of Light too
Yeah, I have zero clue what I had in mind Buf Bravely Default is definitely a good place to start, what with sequel number 2 on the horizon
It is for you, did you have something else in mind that I actually own?
