Yeah true it's very possible to spot subtleties but chances are you won't engage enough in it. I get to thinking about it whenever I see people be like "I acknowledge it's well-written but I still don't like it" which feels a bit off to me because to me at least if I engage enough to realize it's well-written I already like it =P Toriyama just has this certain thing I dislike in his works. Melodrama and character tropes?
Well, it does kind of make sense. You really only spend time dwelling on and analyzing works that you find enjoyable because you are intrinsically motivated to do so. You don't really have that drive when you don't enjoy something. And you can't really spot subtleties before you dig deeper into something. Then again, it is possible to spot subtleties along the way, even if by the end of the work you are dissatisfied with it. But still, you at least need to be involved during the whole thing.
Ah, sorry, misread that a bit I'll come back with a better answer in a second
I'm not sure. If you're referring to FFX, sure, i can see the subtleties. The issue I have is that I think they're not handled very well. And this is all very subjective, and I understand that. Toriyama just has this certain thing I dislike in his works.
I've come to the conclusion that you (a general you, not you in particular) can only really see the subtleties of stories you already like. Thoughts?
That is great to know You can freely skip on 1 though, it's trash XD
Well it's not like I plan on skipping out on P3 =P
Hmm... Well, I guess you know your preferences the best. As for myself, I know that if you're not going for the portable remakes, P3 can be really dated compared to P4, even though P3 has the far better story, characters, narrative, etc. P4 is still a fantastic game though with awesome characters and a very engrossing story, it's just that P3 is one of the greats in my eyes.
1. I don't have a PSP. 2. I'm way more likely to enjoy it if I get hooked on Persona through P4 enough to not mind the less engaging gameplay in favor of a good story.
Any reason why you don't want to try P3 first?
