Reading TV tropes and found this about the show you like: Rei was intended to be a creepy and wrong Deconstruction of the anime fandom's fetish for a perfect, obedient woman. Instead, she became one of the Ur Examples of Moe. She also created an entire character archetype. This may be because she's portrayed as a sympathetic Woobie. In addition, the fandom declared her to be pure straight Fetish Fuel, and later merchandising and marketing began to play up this aspect of her. In fact, I found it interesting because on further research, the show seems to actually be a deconstruction of the giant mech genre, trying to show that that "using fourteen year old children as child soldiers in extremely traumatic battles against Lovecraftian horrors is, to put it bluntly, not very nice and certainly not the kind of idealistic "insert-positive-emotion-here conquers all obstacles" affair that previous super robot shows portrayed it as" So that was interesting Also, more amusingly Many fans of Cheers wrote letters to the show, saying that they wished their own relationships were like Sam and Diane's. One of the show's creators commented that this was insane, because Sam and Diane had "a totally dysfunctional relationship."
