The main sidequests are in the underworld though most involve acquiring additional summons for Rydia. There is one other that gets Cecil his second best weapon.
No I just meant there we go about some sidequests xD It either hasn't had many up until this point or I just missed them all. Which is entirely possible

You're a little over halfway through now. You're actually close to a point where you can travel around a bit and do some side quests in the underworld which are both very beneficial to Rydia.
I think I'm more than halfway done at this point. It's pretty fun, I'm enjoying it! I'm pretty sure its getting on the top game list
You'll have a few more twists in the end but yeah, the game is pretty shameless about it.
I can usually tell when I'm getting a new character because SUDDENLY I have an open spot xD
