Conversation Between Fynn and Karifean

  1. I also like to exaggerate my point for fun (especially around certain members, whose buttons are so easy to push ). Call me a troll, but maybe that's what I am? I don't hate Yuffie quite so much, though she does seem like a pretty unnecessary character, only put in there to fill in a quota of the cute underage girl, which is hella exploitative and I'm just tired of. but that's just my opinion

But yeah, I'm also kind of done with the "How can you hate them! They're such a good person! What do you have against good people?" thing. That is why I made this distinction, because so many times my attitude has been demonized whenever I expressed my dislike for Snow. Sure, he may be a nice guy. but the way he is implemented is really one of the reasons XIII's story failed in my eyes. I hate him because he doesn't work, because his character annoys me. And then people tell me I'm terrible for wanting to punch nice people in the face. You'd think I eat live puppies as a hobby from all those comments, really
  2. Okay never mind then, looks like our stance is pretty similar then after all =P I realized that the way I described my own stance was also too one-sided especially regarding characters like Enoshima who was just incredibly enjoyable to watch despite... well as you said. I guess I'm just more forgiving, that's all. I still enjoy Yuffie for what she is.

Granted, writing a character that seems like a genuine person is insanely hard and rarely done
Probably the main reason why I read charage visual novels. They're pretty good at that most of the time.
  3. I may have been a bit too direct in how I discribe it

The thing is, I do treat characters like people as long as they are written as such. Granted, writing a character that seems like a genuine person is insanely hard and rarely done, so instead of focusing on how the character is as a person, I focus on their other merits and how they work in the context of the story. Which is, for example, why Enoshima is one of my favorite video game characters of all time, despite being written as something removed so far from what a human being is as is possible.
  4. Heh heh, I just realized when you wrote about how you judge characters, I *do* look at characters the same way I look at people, which is probably why I've never had a character I outright disliked. At least as long as my suspension of disbelief doesn't fall apart.
  5. Btw, a VN that may be worth looking out for is Root Double, which is set to be released on Steam sometime this month.
  6. For a second I thought about buying DR2 on console and borrowing a Vita from a friend.

See this is why it sucks to be done with a VN in just a few days. You don't feel like you're finished =P
  7. I hear ya. I've seen that happen myself a bunch of times. I consider myself extremely lucky that I've actually found a community passionate about Key VNs and agree that they're damn well-written and legitimately great works of literature, not just emotional manipulation and puppy killing galore like a huge amount of the VN and anime community say. I don't think it's a mental disorder or anything like that more than it's just engaging with the material in a different way than the "norm".
  8. No, no, I was kind of more expressing a bit of annoyance at a certain... trend on this, uh.. forum. yeah. A trend

I do kind of keep thinking I may have some kind of mental disorder or something due to how different my view of certain things is to other people on a lot of occassions. Like, the consensus about Kingdom Hearts (and I mean about fans, because I know a lot of people just don't like the series and that's okay) is that the story is an incomprehensible mess but it's still great because of the battle system and Disney cameos. And I'm like, totally stumped because at no point was anything about KH not clear to me and I really cannot understand how someone could struggle with comprehending it. And while I think it's cool that I can enjoy it, it's still kind of a bummer to hear that all the time when I do in fact enjoy the story a lot.
  9. Eh well it's been too long since I played FF XIII for me to make a proper defense regarding the execution of its combat system anyway, and I'm not enough into the game to care much either way Still don't see how the level caps are 'fake difficulty' though.

FYI, you don't need to emphasize your tolerance when you're talking to me, I know full well that you don't mind if people like stuff you don't :P
  10. But it's different when a game is balanced to accomodate a level cap. Bravely Default is an example of a game that wasn't easily winnable even at level 99 and maxed jobs. It really boils down to how well the battle system is executed, and if closing off higher levels is the game's way of balancing things and keeping players on edge, then I'm sorry, it's pretty broken in my eyes. I felt frustrated because the game did not let me go at my own pace at all, which is pretty criminal for an RPG. Forgive me, but there is no way I will call a game that gives me one way to play it strategic. But that's just my two cents I'm not gonna go decrying that the whole world is wrong for liking it and how can't people see that my opinion is the correct one *wink wink*
