Conversation Between Fynn and Wolf Kanno

  1. Nah, I’m done with the emulators. I also want to do the new dungeon they added since I never finished it. The whole point of this marathon for me is doing the game with all the extras available. The extra dungeons have been a total blast so far.
  2. Or you could do the fan version via emulator like I am for my Let's Play and let her do the GBA version. You at least get the good version of the music and slightly better translation over the PS1 version.
  3. On a slightly different note, now that I’m in IV’s new post-game, I’ve come to really appreciate Cid. He wasn’t anything special when he showed up in the main game but now, with Thor’s Hammer, he is an absolute beast. I think he’s got the biggest damage output of all the physical fighters (well, in this version. I still can’t get over how my Kain in DS with Break Damage Limit, Focus and darkness managed to deal several dozen thousand damage to Zeromus in one Jump). I’ve no choice but to stan.

Also, my wife is digging IV and it’s gotten her into an FF mood. Considering how much she loves Bravely Default and the job system, she’s really looking forward to playing V. Problem is, I have no clue which version to recommend to her. The main dilemma here stems from the fact that I definitely wanna play Advance this time, since I played Steam the last time. I could recommend her the Steam version since then we could play the games in tandem (since even with me playing TAY after IV, I really doubt she’ll be able to beat V before I reach it as it’s her first time), but I have reservations about that. On the one hand, it has the better music, but then there’s the UI bring really bad (I don’t even personally mind the sprites) since they’re made for mobile, and the fact that she prefers playing JRPGs on handhelds. I could have her play the GBA version and just play something else in the meantime, like finish DQXI or replay Chrono Trigger. But then I really wouldn’t want to interrupt my marathon. I could just not play games in the meantime and focus on reading and creativity and just wait until she finishes.

Idk in the end I guess I’ll just show her some footage for comparison so she can decide what she wants her first FFV experience to be
  4. Very interesting! See, this type of stuff I like because it references stuff from a previous game and makes it part of the new game’s world, but it doesn’t use that opportunity to retcon those two separate games into one continuity
  5. There is a lot of heavy references to FFII in the older supplemtal material for IV, but the details show they are completely different worlds. Minwu for example is a described as a Sage who founded Mysidia and created most known magics, but when his followers grew arrogant with their power, he sealed all magic away before his death. People like Tellah and the Mysidian Elder were scholars in their youth using their talent to break those seals and restore magic, though with better guidance. Meteor is said to be one of the last spells still sealed.

Likewise, one of the founder's of Fabul is said to have been a former Dark Knight named Leonhart, who came to the temple to redeem himself for his crimes and dedicated himself to the monastery. It's the reason why Fabul has a Dark Knight sword, because it was meant to be Leonharts. I think there was maybe one or two more references but they were really minor compared to these two.
  6. Is FFIV’s world somehow confirmed to be linked to FFII?

Also that’s funny because it makes him sound a lot like Palom, but then in the After Years, while still arrogant, I feel that Palom has kind of balanced himself out quite a bit. I think he’s actually one of my favorite characters in that game, story-wise
  7. The hellcats tend to go ultraconservative in their old age. My former boss was the same way.

I like the headcanon from some of the supplemental materials that are likely non-canon by this point but interesting nonetheless. Tellah is usually described as a prodigy who grew incredibly arrogant as he developed magics and broke the seals on Minwu's forbidden magics. Thus he likely was someone who led a life of debauchery at some point.
  8. Yeah I’m starting to develop this head canon that Tellah used to be all sex drugs and rock and roll in his youth. Makes his disapproval of Anna eloping with Edward all the more ironic
  9. I mean to be fair, the old thing is likely them taking some historical liberties with the pseudo-medieval setting and having Tellah feel older because his life expectancy is probably not that high. Cid lives in a more industrial setting so he's not as afflicted and has a higher life expectancy because of it.

That or just assume that Tellah lived a rough life where he partied too hard and never took care of himself. I used to work with a guy like that and despite only being nine years older than me, he looked like he could be my father.
  10. lol that’s accurate

Also, now that both me and my wife are playing FFIV, I was checking some stuff and found out that Tellah is only 60 years old. This is weird to me considering how not only is Cid in the same game just six years younger but in much better condition, but Galuf is also 60 and he’s definitely much more log what I’d expect from an actual 60-year-old. Strago is 70 and I feel that makes sense and would be more accurate for Tellah, but he’s 60. He’s show to be old to the point that he loses strength upon level up and has forgotten most of his spells due to some form of dementia, so why make him only 60? I guess the only reason would be that he’s Anna’s father and she’s in her 20s, so him being around 60 when she was born would be far weirder, but they they could have easily either portrayed him as younger or just made him Anna’s grandfather who’s also her sole guardian and she’s his only descendant. Idk, it’s weird and small but it’s driving me crazy
