I wouldn't really call them extremely popular, more just extremely good =P The biggest amount of popularity they got was through the Higurashi anime. Either way I highly recommend both Higurashi and Umineko. They can both be found on Steam. The latter is my favorite work of fiction~
I know the games are extremely popular, and I know at least one of them is about a series of murders. That's the total extent of my knowledge.
