The first book is amusing, it really starts to take off by the third book cause it begins to focus more on Haplo but the first two books become very important later. Its one of those series where several of the books work well as standalone stories but the final three books suddenly brings them all together beautifully.
I just picked up the first book of the Deathgate Cycle. It's a very interesting concept.
