Rule of thumb when dealing with foreign media in the U.S., we're usually always left behind when it comes to Soviet era content. We didn't really start getting access to anything from the Soviet Russian era until after the Cold War, and even then, being the cultural snobs that we are, they usually don't get as much attention as they deserve unless you are part of the right circles. So yeah, I have never heard of this book until you brought it to my attention.
I knew it I was wondering how well known this is elsewhere, since it’s definitely considered a classic here. I think the fact that it was circulated so much between fans even before being officially published really adds to its mystique lol. Having just started reading it I can say the prose is fantastic.
