Conversation Between Wolf Kanno and Fynn

  1. Well, granted, this is not the same writer, and these writers knew full well that this would be many people’s first foray into the series. So I guess with all the material in the books they had some easy pickings lol

Also, wife has asked me about the After Years as well, as she’s invested now. I recommended her what I think is the optimal way to go about it, in that I think she should not play it right away, since there’s so much retreading. The other problem though is that she prefers to play games in Spanish over English, and the PSP version doesn’t support that language. I’m actually considering getting it on Steam for that reason. It’s also a more streamlined version and it’s nice that it has the same visuals as IV DS. While I personally mourn the loss of the challenge dungeons, she’s not really into that sort of thing so it’d probably work better for her
  2. Interesting. I do find it weird how often writers make sequel plots too similar to the old plots.
  3. Hey, now that I think about it, The Witcher 3 is the After Years to the books’ FFIV lol. The story is new on the surface but basically just remixes a lot of events and plot points from the books, but the characters - both old and new - really make the story enjoyable, and it’s just fun to play. Granted, this game also has DLC where one is amazing for being wholly original while the other just goes all in on the fanservice for both the books and the first game, but if we count just The Wild Hunt, the similarity is uncanny
  4. Never had an interest in it, so I wouldn't know. I am overdo of a replay of the After Years, but I would need to hook my Wii back up to do so. That and try to ignore the other games I have saved on it that I never finished...
  5. Exactly. I’d say a sequel doesn’t need to be necessary in order to be enjoyable. The cast carries TAY and I think that while the new story is a bit of a nostalgic retread, I still think it’s interesting. The Interlude is an example of a completely unnecessary addition that, conversely, does not spark joy
  6. I would say unnecessary is the word I'd describe The After Years. It didn't need to be made, especially since I feel IV had the best closure in the series and no one needed an explanation of the Crystal's origin which just turned into a thinly veiled redo of IV's plot (aliens) but I would agree it's hardly offensive. the cast is still good, the new characters are great, and the the new gameplay features add a lot to the experience.
  7. I agree. It’s far from perfect and overstays its welcome a bit, but I actually really like it. I think the fandom is really exaggerating by calling it terrible.
  8. Very true, and I did find the After Years to be an interesting title even if I had some issues with it.
  9. I find the trials interesting in hindsight, since it’s obviously what inspired the After Years both in terms of story and the challenge dungeons. A lot of the ideas in that game had there roots here.
  10. I never cared for the Lunar Trials because they felt so off from IV as a gameplay experience making them feel a bit more tacked on than I would care for. With that said, I love the extra dungeons for FFV and VI. I just hate V's new classes. They don't do it for me.
