Conversation Between Fynn and Wolf Kanno

  1. I actually ignored sex appeal for Jessica, I never found many of the skills it gave to be good. For me:

Hero - Swords and Courage First, Spear secondary Boomerang third
Yangus - Axes and Humanity first, Scythes secondary
Jessica - Staff first, Whips, Knives and Sex appeal second
Angelo - Bow and Staff first, Sword and Charisma secondary

The thing that helps me out is that several characters either stop getting useful abilities after awhile in their category, or they only get great skills super late in said category making it not worth the trouble in most cases.

If you hate point systems, you're really not going to be happy with DQIX then since it merges VIII's point system with the job class system. Luckily, since the point system deals mainly with weapon skills and they can cross over to different classes, it doesn't feel as overwhelming.
  2. Yeah, I always had trouble with that. I mean, I liked giving Jessica whips, but then I found out she won't learn her best spells unless she has a lot of points invested in staves. Luckily, I've heard her whip skill has been nerfed for the 3DS version, so I'll probably end up investing in staves and sex appeal exclusively. Same for Angelo - it's a shame he looks so good both with a sword and bow.

And then the main character only learns thunder skills if he invests in spears! Who invests in spears! Like, there's no more logical choice of weapon for a hero than a sword! And then Yangus has like three completely interchangeable weapons, the way I see it, and I'm really lost as to which is the coolest.

And now they're adding Red and Morris and I just

This game and Diablo II are the reason point-build systems give me anxiety.
  3. Its not so bad actually. Basically trade off points between two types you like and occasionally throw a few points into a third or fourth one with skills you might want. It helps if you consort a guide and just plan ahead.
  4. Yeah. It's one of the reasons why I can't wait to play it again. The others are that I haven't beaten it yet and that I really liked some of the characters, like Jessica and Yangus.

I'm really dreading the point-build system, though.
  5. Fair enough, course VIII just did it really well, even FFXII's Ivalice doesn't always feel as cohesive as the environments in DQVIII did.
  6. I mean, don't get me wrong, I still like it. I just probably would have liked it much better had I not played VIII before.
  7. I figured as much. I assumed they would just use IX's system of doing things instead, but it looks like they tried to merge VIII and IX's design which may not have been the best choice.
  8. Figured as much since they do mention continents (even though they theoretically shouldn't know what a continent is ). I'm just a bit surprised it's all islands so far and the island I just reached is the smallest one yet.

Also, not sure how I feel about the world map. I mean, they were clearly going for this immersive, DQVIII-like feel, and it's very nice at first glance, but it really lacks that real-life scale and detail that VIII's had and you can clearly tell it wasn't designed Robb's that large originally. Plus, it's segmented, which kinda ruins the immersion further.
  9. Oh they get bigger, hell if memory serves me correct two slabs are actually one continent just cut down the middle.

I would assume they rebalanced the game to compensate for the new job class system.
  10. Yeah, I'll probably stick with the original idea then, but I think I'll give the protagonist Gladiator instead of Sage or Armamentalist, now that I think about it - if I can't keep the spells from the sage anyway, I don't think there's really any point, and the Gladiator should help elevate his power stats. Plus he'll have some nice speed thanks to the Pirate and Tamer, so I think it could be cool. I know a lot of people advise you to get dancer to level 5 for all of your physical characters, so I might just do that as well.

The way it used to work, according to what you said, is exactly how it worked in DQ VI and yes, it was broken there as well. So I'm actually kind of happy it's more balanced. We'll see if I lose my mind near the end because of those monsters, then XD

As for my progress, I just liberated the second island and am exploring the volcano in the present right now. It's all pretty fun so far, though I kinda expected the new areas that unlock to be a bit larger than just these tiny islands. But hey, I'll take what I can get.

Thanks for the article, by the way! I'll take a look later!
