Conversation Between Wolf Kanno and Karifean

  1. Lol yeah I'd imagine. Our society kinda has a real bad complex about intelligence. Like I'll be frank, I really don't think it's invalid to compare mental aptitude to physical aptitude. Some people have it more than others, and people like Schwarzenegger are on the far top end of the spectrum. It wouldn't be a contentious thing to claim that Schwarzenegger is probably better equipped to lift heavy weights than most people. And yet if you even *dare* imply that people may not be qualified to have a meaningful opinion on important issues, it's "offensive" and "insulting". Dunno, it's just people bloating their egos (which, mind you, really doesn't come as a surprise in a society where you are essentially expected to do so to even just get a job).
  2. Yeah, pretty much. I feel it's a good thing to try to bridge the gaps in equality through empowerment. Sadly some people misconstrue this meaning or simply see it as an opportunity.

The discussion of democracy has been an odd one for me in the last few years. It's especially annoying in my country because people tend to have strong and often warped views of what democracy really is. The fact I usually have to bring it to people's attention that we're a democratic republic, and not a democracy says a lot. Don't even get me started when socialism gets brought up. I remember when I was a taking a U.S. history course and got into a heated discussion with my classmates about the Federalist and anti-Federalist movements that broke out after the Revolutionary War when the founding father's were debating about what the new government would be. You don't make a lot of friends when you tell half your class that you don't trust them to make an educated vote on an issue.
  3. It's a form vs substance thing I suppose, and due to that I view it as a short term vs long term thing. Short term yeah having more allies for a noble goal is a good thing. But I think it's still valuable to recognize that long term, even just the mindset that it doesn't matter is *inevitably* empowering people who can push their own profits while selling to you that they're doing the right thing to reach/remain at the top, whereas people who would take a hit to themselves for the greater good are conversely disempowered.

Mind you, while I certainly don't like that, this is more an observation than a normative claim. I don't think any sort of "people should be different" idea is suitable for politics. Part of the reason I don't believe in democracy, people aren't just going to responsibly inform themselves and cast a good vote because they should, and the same thing about empowering people who can sell to you that they're doing the right thing also applies to it.
  4. If this was a matter of integrity, I would say it does matter why Marvel is doing it. Yet, I feel Slothy largely said what I would say. They may be doing it to capitalize on larger markets and to stay in good standing with a culture that has become increasingly obsessed with social justice, but it doesn't really change the fact that doing so has more benefits for culture and society to make up for their less than noble intentions. I don't really see a down side here so its fine for the moment.
  5. Does it really matter that Marvel/Disney is just doing it for the money?
A fascinating question to ask. I don't have much to add to the topic in question given I don't watch Marvel much anymore but now I'm curious if you think it matters or if it really doesn't matter at all ^^
  6. Good video, thanks for linking me to it.

I've always felt XII's writing and character growth were always more subtle than the more bombastic nature people are used to. Matsuno always has a bit of an Elizabethan flair to his writing so his games always feel more like watching a play than a film or TV show.
  7. By the way, I found this the other day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2Mi_USWhPc

Interesting to me that both of them consider Vaan to be their favorite character. Think next time I play I'll try to watch out for how his presence affects the other party members' own development, I never really felt like that was too pronounced.
  8. We'll have to see what happens in the coming weeks as more information is released.
  9. Yeah, and this goes well beyond the anime industry or community, it's also the biggest confirmed mass-murder in Japan since WW2, period... albeit slightly by technicality since there was a bigger one that was never *confirmed* arson. I don't like to speculate on the motives involved too much. We'll see how the situation develops. What is more helpful at least is people are already posting different ways of chipping in to help those affected (though waiting for an official statement as many are doing is perfectly reasonable).
  10. Not until you brought it to my attention. That is pretty terrible news. That studio has worked on a lot of cool stuff I've loved over the years and it's a shame a lunatic has caused so much suffering for people have really only brought joy into people's lives.
