That's exactly my gripe. With a much better writer on board, XIII could have had a really great story, because the potential is there. Still, the way it is written really makes it hard to enjoy any of the characters. I especially take issue with Snow and Hope's resolution because I saw it done in Persona 3 before and it was executed much better
Troll sounds about right. Regarding quotas and stuff I make it a point to avoid that kind of thinking myself. I don't want to get hung up on perceived negatives and blind myself to positives. I think it's an important distinction to make at times, especially with characters like Snow who are very often disliked for their personality rather than their position as a character. I do think Snow in the context of FF XIII had a nice message about what baseless optimism and idealism can do to a group of pessimistic and cynical people, both positive and negative. But then again that's just conceptual, the execution is, well... improvable.
