But only barely.
I'll trust your word seeing how you read way more books than I do. See, I am dumb and am also literate.
Yeah, I'm just speaking as someone who's read the books. There are a lot of good things about the series. The man can yarn a mystery and a build up like no one's business. But the violence and sexual violence against women really makes me uncomfortable at times. And I'm not one who easily gets squicked out or uncomfortable about that stuff in my fiction.
I can't comment on the writer's motivation for scenes like that since I haven't got into the series in depth, but yeah, sounds like that goes overboard too. The few episodes of the show I caught seemed to have nudity for the sake of nudity in it, as well. Again, sounds like a Jr. High student's rough draft to me.
I don't think I've actually felt sad at any deaths except for maybe Ned's (Sean Bean). Good god, his death was tragic. One of my major complaints is the treatment of women in the series. Like, I get that it's supposed to be a medieval setting (albeit a fictional one) so it's maybe not so untrue. But like, when pretty much every page has a mention of a woman being raped or brutally murdered or both, it just seems like...I dunno, like maybe GRRM has some issues with women he's taking out in text.
Exactly. Like, I don't need some sappy happy story to get into things. A lot of my favorite stories are usually dark and/or tragic. But all tension gets deflated more and more when you revolve a series around death after death. Honestly, if you took the outline of that story and gave it to someone without context, it would sound like a rough draft from a Jr. High student. I am sure there are cool things in the book/show from what I have seen/read, and there are some damn fine actors in the show. I just can't get invested in a story that keep going, "Uh, then this character dies too. Feel sad." Too forced.
That's a really good point. Like, a lot of the deaths are important to move plot points forward, but sometimes they're overtly gruesome or gratuitous.
Yeah, I figured it would help it. That damn song.
Hahah, yes. The video is a nice touch.
Hope you liked my speech!
