Just looked it up on wiki real quick. It made no mention of him ever being an employee of Square and just that he did commissioned work for him. Wiki isn't always accurate though and I only read the introduction.
Let me know where you found that Amano was no longer an SE employee! I know he left certain positions but I couldn't find anything saying he'd left the company - for some reason no wiki wants to say that, so I figured he was still paid a salary. D=
