they're used in digital logic circuits, among others. it'd probably be best for your own education if you just read about them yourself. look up NAND gates on wikipedia and you'll probably link to a bunch of relevant articles, like Adolf Hitler or something like that.
What is it they do? I'm always curious about anything, really, so this is all quite interesting haha.
4 2-input NAND gates packaged up into one lovely little integrated circuit. They're extremely useful. Why, there are probably some NAND gates inside your computer! (sorry I kind of want to base my life around things like this)
