A Little Faith

Old musings that haunt me until today.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The human condition is quite an ironic thing, don’t you think?
When no one claims your heart, you’d do anything short of flinging it to the next person who crosses your path. When someone wants it, you keep under lock and key, shoved to where it can never be found without your consent.
The fear of pain is a scary thing but the want of love is something else entirely.
I’m no different. I don’t want to assume that there’s something behind the smile, the stolen glances, the gentle brush of your arm to mine – shut up, vicious and traitorous galloping and flushing – but the heart, oh, the heart begs to differ.
It frightens me. To succumb would mean to relinquish control, to break down the carefully crafted laws of my world.
But then again..
..it might not be so bad after all.
What I’m trying to say is I think it would be okay to let you in.
    I think the want of love and the fear of not getting it is the worst pain of all.
    It's always a risk taken to choose to love someone.
    You can't imagine how long it took her to break down my walls.
    And I'm so glad she did.
    I recommend reading Act Three from this NPR transcript. Contains a passage from a favorite author, who wrote his last book in rhyme. Transcript | This American Life
    It recounts the old story of the turtle and the scorpion, which is given some meaning with the following:
    "I think what it means is that central to living, a life that is good is a life that's forgiving. We're creatures of contact. Regardless of whether we kiss or we wound, still we must come together.
    Though it may spell destruction, we still ask for more, since it beats staying dry, but so lonely on shore. So we make ourselves open, while knowing full well it's essentially saying, please, come pierce my shell."
    Wow, that's beautiful. I'll put it on my reading list then! Thank you for the recommendation .
    And yes, choosing to love someone opens yourself to the possibility of heartbreak, to losing control over your world. It's madness but it's an necessary evil.
