To plume up my will in double knavery

Want to learn Mafia?

This came up in the EC.

Fishing for interest in a Mini-Mafia game (played on your reg EoFF accounts) using a teaching setup, (heavily) mafiascum.net style with a few modifications to suit EoFF.

The idea is for people who are new to Mafia to get a basic idea about how the game is played before DK hosts the next big game, so that you don't wind up floundering about like...well, me in Anniversary Mafia. Ideally, I'll want at least one, but no more than 3 experienced Mafia players to get the ball rolling and act as "teachers" (think mafiascum.net's IC and SE slots), at least one person who has never played before, and fill in the rest of the slots with people who consider themselves to be newbies at Mafia (based on self-assessment only, I don't care how many games you've played on EoFF or off)

If this happens, there will be 9 players total. If I don't get 9, the game doesn't happen. If I get more than 9, priority goes towards newest players, with the surplus being a replacement pool. If I don't get an IC, the game doesn't happen.

The setup will be mafiascum.net's 2of4 open variant, with the text of all possible role PMs posted openly at the beginning.
5 Vanilla Townies
1 Mafia Rolecop
1 Mafia Goon
2 of the following 4 possibilities with no duplication possible {Sane Cop, Sane Doctor, Jailkeeper, Vanilla Townie}

Roles will be assigned randomly, so the experienced players have the same probability of being scum as anyone else.

EoFF-specific variants:
1) Day phase will last 72 hours or until a majority lynch is reached. Night phase will be 18 hours or until all night actions have been submitted. Those with no night actions must PM me with "End night" if they want the night to end early.

Regular EoFF games have a 24 hour day period -- I think this is too short for a learning experience, but longer day periods in a teaching game will be poor preparation for a reg EoFF game. I think 72 hours is a good compromise, but I'm flexible on this.

2) Mafia will be able to talk to each other during day periods, unlike at mafiascum.net. That's how real games are played at EoFF, and that's how any teaching game I run will be played. This is not negotiable.

Different from EoFF, same as mafiascum:
1) There will be no audience/discussion thread. Non-players will have to reserve their commentary until post-game analysis (PGA)
2) Dead players will be able to talk to each other while the game goes on. This discussion will be posted publically after the game along with the scum chat and night action resolution.

More experienced players: I encourage you to watch the game as it's played, even if you're not in it, so that you can chip in your $0.02 during PGA

New players: If you have general questions on how Mafia is played, feel free to ask them in this blog post. Even if more experienced players don't answer, I will. You're safe from being told to RTFM here.

All: If you tell me to go ahead with it in this blog post, I will expect you to sign up should the game happen. Also, if anything is unclear (particularly the mafiascum.net influences), feel free to ask.

Small games like these are actually my favorite types in general.

I'd argue that the longer days might prevent people from getting more into it. And possibly even hinder learning because of that.

@Futan: Longer days means more content between flips, so more chances to learn, and with a short day someone who's busy doesn't really have the opportunity to play. You could join in, make one post in RVS, go to work or school and when you get back, the day's all but over.

I guess it all depends on how busy the player's lives are. But I agree that you should cater to the busier.

I think 72 hour days is way too long, even for a teaching game. 48 hours is plenty if you want to make sure everyone has plenty of opportunity to post and read. Could you even think of things to talk about for 3 days straight?

I just finished a game with a three week deadline, which was extended due to the holiday season, and I was worried about running out of time. Of course, that's because no majority vote in that game resulted in a no lynch.
