Really? Like... For Real?

So. I spam around on another FF forum and tra-la-la, I'm thinking everything's.... Ok. Decent, fun, whatever... For being a graveyard.

Until the subject of Tipping servers in the United States vs. Other Countries (like New Zealand) comes up.

And because I've been a server for like -ever-, I know the deal. I guess no one else has ever worked in a restaurant over on that place 'cuz they're like "I think it's rude to accept a tip" and I'm like "uhhh... Not when it's what you -live- off of from day-to-day".

Then someone makes a comment about how apparently "every" place in Ohio automatically adds a 15% gratuity regardless and you have to talk to a manager and dispute the bill in order to get the grat taken off so that you're not "tipping the restaurant".

I simply pointed out to him that he's not "tipping the restaurant", the tip is for the servers and a percentage of the food & drink you consumed price-wise comes out of that server's tip and gets distributed amongst the bartender(s) and busser(s). I also mentioned that the avg server wage is a measly $2.13/hr + our tips - what we have to tip out. Cooks, Dishwashers, and Managers are on Hourly & Salary wages - they don't get tips. And so no, he's not tipping the restaurant itself - he's tipping the server.

Simple point, wasn't being rude or obnoxious, just stating facts.

I get a PM from this guy and he completely blind-sided me with what he said. That he felt I crossed the line, insulted his intelligence, and that if I'm going to point him out like that I should take it up in PM and not out in public.

Then he went on to say that if he sees any posts that have me as the last poster, he won't look at it until someone else has posted and then he just skips over what I've said. He also said something about other members kind of complaining that what I say never makes sense or is off-topic, which yeah, sometimes I do get O/T, but I also have ADHD. I can't help it sometimes.

He also said that I claim I post to boost forum activity or whatever and something snarky tacked on the end. I've never claimed anything of the sort. If I post a lot or make random comments that have nothing to do with anything whatsoever it's 1 of 2 things, or a mix of both: Boredom & my ADHD kicking in.

I rarely get my feathers ruffled over stupid internet drama, but the way this person came out of the blue and said the things that he said to me was really upsetting.

Not only did hardly ever interact with this person, but the few times I chose to leave comments on his blog posts, I was nothing but nice - like I always am - with everyone.

So instead of going on a rampage and cursing and whatnot like I normally would, I just simply told him that he has an "I'm Better Than You" Attitude that should probably get fixed very soon, I've -never- been rude or derogatory towards him, I'm not a dumb ass like he may think, and it isn't my fault if he can't handle someone telling him what's really up - even if it's done in the nicest way possible.

I also thanked him for intimating (upon using -that- word, I pointed out that I really -am- capable of intelligent conversation and know how to use big/complex words) that there were other members who felt that my presence was..... Oh hell. Annoying. Unwanted. Whatever.

And I congratulated him for actually making me no longer want to be a member there.

And then I made my final blog post and just told those fools I'm out. And I apologized for overstaying a welcome that apparently had never really been extended in the first place. And I invited the Powers That Be to go ahead and delete my account and any content I contributed.

Like I said, I rarely get upset over dumb sh*t like this, but this was just too much. It was completely uncalled for and I didn't deserve it. At all.

Don't bring up the tipping thing here, either. Just...don't.

lol I wasn't the one that started the conversation in the first place.

But yeah, it's definitely a hot button issue - I think even worse than religion or politics. People get so angry on both sides lol.

I think anyone who has ever been a server can really appreciate the situation. When someone says they tip 10% I go off the wall. x)

FWIW, tipping isn't "automatically added" at every restaurant in Ohio. That guy is a moron.

    Though it smurfing should be.

Some (read: some, not all) will automatically charge you 15% gratuity if your party is 8 persons or more.

I usually tip 15% if the waiter/waitress is nice. 20% or more if they make me feel good after eating there.

The only time I've refused to give a tip was when the waiter asked my date why they never went out together, even though they had plans to. smurf you dude, I'm on a date!!
