Headed down to the Department of Labor today. They've been keeping tabs on me for the last month, because I'm drawing food stamps, like a metric crap ton of other people.
They gave me a "Record of Work-Seeking Activities" to fill out. I had to make 12 contacts in a 30-day period. Naturally, I procrastinated on this point ad nauseum. I put in an application at the supermarket at the end of the block, and had nothing else.
Then it occurred to me; they don't require me to limit myself to job hunting in retail, or even clerical.
So I performed a Google search for "Nashville Recording Studios," and my computer exploded.
Heh, not really. But I just went through the studios that came up, called them one by one, told them my name, that I'd played guitar for 17 years, and 14 of them here in town, and that I was looking for session work.
A few of them asked for my contact info; most flatly declined the moment they heard I wasn't union. One even refused to give me his name, sounding extremely annoyed (you can bet I ain't gonna be going to his studio if I ever do get funding). But in less than an hour, I was able to fill out 11 contacts on my sheet, and at 8:15 this morning, I brought it into the Department of Labor.
Ms. Ashley Ligon was my caseworker, and she complemented me on doing "an awesome job."
I sure am quicker on the uptake since I quit drinking. ;)
