I don't know if its the translation that's making it all vague and etheral-like but these Japanese authors are really strange to read!

Banana Yoshimoto
Haruki Murakami
Natsuo Kirino
Junichiro Tanzaki
Ueda Akinari - But I love him most of all

It makes me think the Japanese are hiding something pyschotic in their subconscious levels.

I read one of Banana Yoshimoto's stories in its original Japanese. Omfg it was hard enough to read because of the way she writes Japanese, but the subject matter made it even more wtf. o_O

If you're not just interested in books and would consider manga as well Ito Junji is one of the most disturbing authors I know.
