Wolf Kanno's Crazy Ramblings and Incoherent Statements

Trying to remember a feeling.

Normally I really hate writing personal posts like this but my strong dislike of EoEO and the fact this topic doesn't feel quite "EoEO material" as well as posting it in the Writing Forum felt weird because it's a bit too personal and I feel that forum should stick to its primary focus.

So recently I came upon some writer's block with a novel I am working on and so I decided to shift gears and work on a different story instead until I recharge and have a chance to step back from it for a time to get a new view of the story and characters. The issue is the project I really want to work on has its own problems.

To make a long story short (too late) I'm trying to write down a short story idea I came up with several years ago that largely culminates my feelings about a relationship I had that ended disastrously for me. Obviously this story came from a dark place but time heals all wounds or at least creates good scar tissue and so I've been finding it difficult to write it because it lacks the raw feeling it had when I first came up with the idea for the story. I find I am being too analytical about the whole thing and now the story is going through the emotions but lacking the raw drive that made it something I actually wanted to write.

I'll probably move onto something else but I really wanted to work on this one. I just needed to vent my frustration I guess as I am not really looking for advice or support, just getting that feeling out I guess so I can focus more clearly on other things.Anyway, I think I'm going to crash for the night.

Well, good luck with your thing! Writer's block is horrible - I have it all the time, actually. I feel it usually goes away after some time regardless of how much time I spend actively fighting it. Hope it leaves you soon.

Yeah, this sort of thing can definitely be difficult when there is a long period of time separating yourself from the initial feelings that inspired the idea. I'd personally just say to write it anyways. Writer's block will always be around, and you just have to shoulder through it. Will what you write turn out crap? Quite possibly, but the hardest part can sometimes be just getting out that initial draft. After getting those ideas out on paper, reading over it again, working on the revision process ... sometimes just that process can help bring those emotions and whatnot back into focus that you are trying to tap into. Or maybe it won't. And if it doesn't, you can always table that draft and come back to it another day when you are possibly feeling it more. I've just always thought that if you want a story to be written, it's never going to happen unless you are the one that just pushes through that block to get it out.

All that being said, I've been in the same place myself. Sometimes no matter what, I just am not in a place in my life to be able to write the piece I want to. Still, I think it's always good to have some bit of writing from the idea to go back to because no matter how crappy it turns out, there's generally at least one little golden nugget there I could use in the future.

And I know you said you didn't want advice and I'm sorry. I didn't intend on actually typing something out this long. It's been quite a while since I've talked writing with people. I miss it.

It's all good and I thank you for the helpful advice. I have no problem talking writing either so feel free to chat me up if you want to vent or talk shop.

Just to give a little bit of an update, I finally got working on the story. I overcame some of the issues I had by changing the format to a narrative poem which is something I've never done before and has made working on it much more enjoyable. I am almost finished with the first draft and already have a few ideas on where I want to refine it, so yay me!

Update of an update. The first draft is finished and I got my wish of "remembering a feeling" and have slowly been reminded of the age old adage of "be careful what you wish for"

Figure I should close this out. I finished the story somewhere about the fourth draft I figure it was as good as it was going to get. While it did not turn out to be the story I originally envisioned, I can say it definitely held the raw energy it had when I first came up with it.

Sadly it dragged up some old feelings and now I have to reconsider certain aspects of my current state of affairs. I've come to some hard truths and I guess it will take some time to figure out where to go from here. On the other hand, I feel more creative now than I have in a long time. I already finished a draft for another short story, working on a new short story which I might use for a bigger one and I'm revisiting two stories I've been wanting to do for awhile but never had the confidence to do before.

I guess to end this, I'll simply post an image of the creative process for people who don't know.
