999 First Impressions

Well I've reached the first actual choice so I thought it might be a good time to give first impressions.

Sorry about this being the only screenshot, I fear running into spoilers if I look for anything else.

First things first.

OH MY GOD THAT TEXT SPEED IS SO SLOW IT'S KILLING ME.

*Ahem* Sorry. I haven't read a visual novel that didn't just skip the text-appearing-animation if you click since... I think Ace Attorney, which was my very first visual novel. Takes getting used to for sure. But well, moving on.

The first thing that happens is you wake up in a room presumably in a ship somewhere, and it's not long before one of the windows breaks and water starts flooding the room. The only way out is through a locked door with an ominous red "5" painted on it.

I like how the game just presents you with the first puzzle right away. It's a good way to get accustomed to everything and the puzzle was straightforward enough to be solved quickly. Thank god there wasn't a time limit though, that would've freaked me out.

After we escape the room we get to meet the rest of the cast, and I really don't know anything about them yet besides that one of them is my childhood friend and another one of them is probably dead now. The 9th guy thought it was a great idea to be a jerk and take one of the others hostage to be able to advance himself, but it seems he just got blown to bits behind a locked door. I'll be going there momentarily to check...

So what exactly is going on? Well the nine of us have been locked into a ship by an unknown person calling themselves "Zero". We've so far only seen them with a gas mask and through a speaker, and his voice had been altered so we have literally zero clues as to what his true identity is. Anyways, this Zero tells us we're part of a game, the "Nonary Game", the goal of which is to survive; there are nine people in the ship, we need to find the exit which is supposedly a door with the number 9 on it, and we have nine hours to do so before the ship sinks. Well damn. I hope we don't have more idiots going rogue thinking they can defy this guy and escape themselves.

A quick bit of speculation: Zerois Junpei. Somehow. As of now I have no real reason for suspecting it besides knowing the writer through another work of his.

Overall, I'm very curious as to how this game will unfold. I'm getting Ever17 vibes from it. There's a lot of potential for a good, thrilling storyline and with how much good I've heard about it I hope it doesn't betray my expectations~

Edit: HAHAHAHA Small Bombs. That's too funny.

Flip the numbers upside down and it's the number of the beast!

Glad you're enjoying! But yes, the text speed is atrocious. When you're replaying for all the endings (because of course you are) you can skip over text. Also it does a handy thing in that it greys out choices you've already made.

    This game is amazing!

If you like this, there's a sequel on the 3DS and Vita called Virtue's Last Reward (haven't played it yet, but I have it), and a lot of the same people went on to create the Dangan ronpa series for the PSP and Vota, and those are some seriously fantastic titles.

I already own Virtue's Last Reward

Sadly Danganronpa is a bit inaccessible for me, as I have neither a PSP nor a Vita and none of my friends have one either. If I do get an opportunity I'll check out the first game at the very least.

I think there have been fan-made ports to the PC! But I may be mistaken. There's also the option of emulation. There are fan-translations of the PSP version, while only the Vita releases have official ones.

I've did a couple fan arts for this game. It's actually really great, and I have to agree that the text speed is really slow when you first play. But you can easily skip through the text when you're doing your other playthroughs to get the other endings. It's really amazing, the true ending really throws you off when you learn who's Zero and whatnot. omg, so amazing.
