Character Appreciation: Totooria (Totori) Helmold

Rate this Entry

Totori Helmold is a character from the Atelier series, specifically Atelier Arland. She is in both Atelier Totori and Atelier Meruru, and gets a special guest star appearance in Atelier Rorona Plus. She is 13 years old at the start of Atelier Totori and 19 years old at the start of Atelier Meruru.

Totori is a young alchemist who was "trained" by Rorona, the protagonist of the first game in the trilogy. She is out main hero in Atelier Totori, and she is the mentor of Meruru in the last game of the trilogy. She has a pretty natural talent for it, no matter what she thinks, because she succeeded so while despite having an eccentric and usually absent teacher.

Totori's biggest fault is her self-esteem. She believes herself below average in most ways, despite being very talented. She's also very kind and caring and gentle. I really like that she respects other people and their personal boundaries. She doesn't force them in to a friendship they're uncomfortable with or pressure them to be different. She accepts and likes people for who they truly are. In Meruru, she also becomes much more confident and really shows off her intelligence and knowledge as well.

Here's to you Totori!

I like her color scheme a lot.

I really need to try this series again. The only one I played was on the DS, and, while it wasn't bad, I dunno, it just didn't hold my interest. Is there any in particular you'd recommend?

Depends on your interest. There's a time limit in most of the games, so if you want something less strict I would go for Atelier Rorona Plus, Atelier Escha & Logy, or Atelier Shallie. If you prefer more strict time limits for extra challenge I would recommend Atelier Totori, Atelier Meruru, or Atelier Ayesha.

If you want a darker environment and more serious story, the Dusk trilogy would be more your speed (Ayesha, Escha & Logy, Shallie), but if you want something more lighthearted, bright, and character focused I would go with the Arland trilogy (Rorona, Totori, Meruru)

If you care about doing them in order, the orders I have listed above are the correct orders. You can start at any point you want but you might not get all of the references.
