Character Appreciation: Lloyd Irving

Rate this Entry

Haven't done a male character yet even though there are many great mans in video game land! Lloyd Irving is a character in Tales of Symphonia. He is a 17 year old human boy who was adopted by a dwarf. He fights with twin blades.

Lloyd is initially portrayed as a slow, naive hero. Being adopted by a dwarf, he knows the dwarven laws by heart and really takes them... well to heart. He can recite them at a moment's notice and uses them as a code to live by. In some ways at the start of the journey, he is a naive young man.

He grows a lot throughout his adventure as he learns more about who he is and the way of the world. He keeps a strong moral code, however, although he is willing to adopt new information in to his pre-existing view of the world and adapt. That is something I admire as it is something some people just don't do.

As the story goes on you learn that Lloyd is not as stupid as he may seem at first glance. While a bit naive and stubbornly optimistic, Lloyd is actually quite clever outside of book smarts. He knows how to play things to his advantage and to formulate smart plans on the spot. He's also a great friend and capable of deep inner reflection. For those reasons, Lloyd is one of my favourite Tales of main protagonists.

Here's to you Lloyd!
