It's FanArt Friday! Welcome to another edition of Final Fantasy Fan Art Showcase of the Week, where we show the best of the best from DeviantArt! Proto has run this show for 87 weeks now, so I clearly have some big shoes to fill, but I'll do my best. I hope you send him a massive thanks for his efforts over that time, and thankfully he'll be continuing working with the DeviantArt EyesonFF group. Are you watching the group? I hope so!

This week will see one other minor change aside from the host, and that is the addition of Cosplay of the Week. Each week we'll be showing off one of the best Cosplays we can find around DeviantArt. I have to say, this week's one is pretty freakin' awesome. ...

Eyes on Final Fantasy is looking for new members to join our team. We are one of the oldest Final Fantasy sites on the net, providing news, opinion pieces, videos and more on the game series we all love and on Square-Enix in general. We have one of the largest FF communities on the net - check out this Kotaku article about our site!

    Story

    Final Fantasy XV

Noctis is the heir to the throne of Lucis. Noctis and another person, a woman named Stella, are able to see a "light" that allows them to predict people's deaths. This light comes from the legend of the Goddess of Death, Etro, who is said to greet the souls of the deceased by opening the door to the afterlife. When the door opens, the souls of the departed burst out in a streak of light, a light which very few can see.

Lucis is a country holding the world's last crystal which is beneficial to its military, economic, and political standing. Because of its apparent industrialization compared to its neighbouring countries, Lucis has isolated itself from the rest of the world.

At one time, all of the other countries had crystals, but lost them to war and fighting. They used all of their resources on weapons and warfare, gaining things like firearms and magic, but in the process they neglected other social aspects which led to diminishing quality of life. Lucis was in a cold war with the rest of the world over the use of the last crystal, but a peace treaty was recently signed to end the stand-off.

However, under the guise of peace, the Kingdom of Niflheim broke the treaty and conquered the nations of Solheim, Tenebrae, and Accordo, before attacking Lucis to steal the crystal.

It's Final Fantasy XIII, Jim, But Not As We Know It

The final piece in the XIII trilogy, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is different. Yes, the game shares characters with the earlier game. The plots vaguely link into each other. That's pretty much it. The battle, gear and leveling systems seen in the old games have all been dropped in favour of something new. The world has changed. The atmosphere ...

For me, the exploring of the newly created world ranks very high up in my list. I really love how they've implemented the fog of war so that you have to explore to unveil the map. Can't wait to die many times over while trying to get to awkward corners. xD

Beyond that, housing is a massive thing for me - particularly LS housing rather than personal housing. I want to make our LS the most awesome place there ever was. Probably won't be the best place on the server or whatever, but dammit, it'll be ours, and that makes it amazing in it's own right.

    Of course, another massive ...

I'll start with the pretty stuff rather than a wall of text, because if you're anything like me, you want the goodies.

    Screenshots: スクエニ、Gamescom 2012にて「FFXIV: 新生エオルゼア」最新SSを公開 - GAME Watch

For those who don't know, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (aka Final Fantasy XIV 2.0) is basically a sequel to Final Fantasy XIV, but your character from Final Fantasy XIV (the original/current one) gets imported into the game and Final Fantasy XIV (original/current) will cease to exist. It is, in effect, a completely new game. It has a new graphics engine, new server system, new features, new battle system, new gathering system... all the stuff from the current game, such as storyline and maps? The story will be 'in the past', the maps will be completely redesigned.

Something big and bad is coming to Eorzea, and it will involve all characters being sent to a 'timeless zone' and then dropped back into the game in A Realm Reborn, to explore the new maps, the new storyline, ...

Outside of the whole screenshots and gameplay footage found in the other thread, there is a lot being said on the internets about what is being said at Gamescom. Expect some things to be lost in translation (Japanese to German to English to Occasional Poor Journalist Putting Words In People's Mouths to ...me!)...

    - It is likely that FFXIV's existing players will be given priority placement in the beta for A Realm Reborn.
    - It is likely that, eventually, FFXIV's existing players will be given the ability to transfer their current character into the beta.
    - A Golden Saucer-like place is being worked on where people can gamble away all their gil (economy impact sounds high for that one!). This will not likely be available at launch.
    - The new story will be "very Final Fantasy".
    - They are continuing to work on how best to implement FFVI-styled Magitek Armour (and FFIII's Crystal Tower).
    - The graphics are apparently "the best in MMORPG history" - something that I can imagine some people will put to the test...
    - Summons ...

Three has become four as Square Enix have announced yet another title to join the "Compilation of Final Fantasy VII". The latest title is Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII and will feature on the PSP. Little has been revealed about what we can expect in this game, however Square Enix have described it as an action RPG. Still, we have a long time to wait - the game is due for release in Japan in early 2006.

The games director will be Hajime Tahata, and production is notably being overseen by the director fo the original Final Fantasy VII, Yoshinori Kitase. This won't be the first time these two work in similar roles together - they were both involved in Final Fantasy VII: Before Crisis. Tetsuya Nomura will lead the way in character design.

Roogle and myself have decided to once again accept applications for the job of an EoFF News Reporter. To enter an application, ensure that you have registered an account at EoFF's forums, and send a private message to myself.

The PM should include an example of something you would put up on the frontsite of EoFF, followed by a link to the page where you found the information in the news entry. Should you be accepted, you will find yourself working alongside the other news reporters - Cid, Strider and Kalinda - as well as the rest of the EoFF Site Staff team.

Applications will be judged on the information included in the news entry, spelling and grammar and their ability to manipulate me with money and sexual advances. Only one position is currently available.

Looking forward to hearing from you all! ...

Roogle and I have decided that now is a good enough time as any to parade the artistic talents of our many site-surfers and forum-posters. If you would like to submit some fanart to the site, please send your art in an email to webmaster@eyesonff.com - please ensure you follow the below guidelines for the files:

  • We strongly prefer JPG and GIF files, although PNG is okay. Don't send anything else, though.
  • If possible, send a 60x60 image of the art. If not, someone will make one.
  • At least one of your FanArt submissions should relate to one of the games created by Squaresoft or Square Enix.
  • If it's your first submission, include your name as you want it to be displayed, your email address and a website url (if applicable).

The submissions will be moderated, so Mik, before you try: NO. ...

And for everyone who doesn't celebrate Christmas (or Spiffmas), have an awesome December 25th anyway! No reason not to, eh? ;D ...
