It's time for Round 3: We're more famous for our Non-FF titles

Yasumi Matsuno - Matsuno began his career working for the company Quest, where he made his debut with his two signature SRPG series Ogre Battle and Tactics Ogre. Matsuno was eventually scouted by Sakaguchi who was a big fan of his games. Matsuno himself was a huge fan of the FF series and jumped at the chance to join Square; he took some of his Quest employees with him and they were joined with Hiroyuki Ito to create Final Fantasy Tactics, an FF SRPG in the same style as Tactics Ogre. The game's success led Matsuno to work on the cult classic genre-defining Vagrant Story which was the first game by Square to get a perfect score in Famitsu magazine.

He moved on to be a supervisor on the PlayOnline system before he was chosen by Sakaguchi to work on the next FF title. During XII's development, Matsuno worked as a producer for the spiritual sequel to FFTactics - Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Soon afterwards, Matsuno became ill and had to leave FFXII's development. He quit Square-Enix shortly after and has now become a freelance designer who worked on Mad World for the Wii, SE's remake of his Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, and a new title with Level-5. ...

The Old Dogs and Up and Comers

Hiromichi Tanaka - Hiromichi Tanaka left college with Sakaguchi so they could join Square and make video games. Tanaka is best known for being a key designer for the first three Final Fantasy games being one of the founders of the Job Class system. He later moved onto work on the Seiken Densetsu (Mana) series and Chrono franchises before being brought back to work as the producer for FFXI, which he considers to be an evolution of FFIII. Later on he helmed the remake of FFIII for the DS and was tasked developing FFXIV. Due to the commercial failure of FFXIV, Tanaka stepped down from the development team and later retired from Square-Enix. He remains a controversial figure for the FF MMO community but is probably most well-known and beloved by the Mana and Chrono fans.

Kazushige Nojima - Nojima joined Square sometime in the mid-90s making his debut as the director of the cult Super Famicom game Bahamut Lagoon. His first and most notable intro to the series was working with Kitase in adapting the original story by Nomura and Sakaguchi for FFVII. ...

So I was asked to give a helpful guideline of the movers and shakers of our beloved FF series so people will have a more educated idea of who to vote fir in the 25th Anniversary Ciddies.

    Part One: The Big Guns

Hironobu Sakaguchi - Creator of Final Fantasy, Sakaguchi was the director, designer, and producer of the first five Final Fantasy games. He stepped down from this position during FFVI's development but still worked on as a producer and later executive producer for the rest of the series until he left Square in 2002. Sakaguchi was also one of the Big 3 of the creation of Chrono Trigger, he promoted the use of Mode 7 and the jump to Sony's CD based system to better utilize technology for the series. He wrote the original story with Tetsuya Nomura for FFVII, came up with the concept for Parasite Eve, and was the Executive Producer for most of Square's non-FF titles released in the PS1 era. His creation and push for technology made Square into a powerhouse but his foray into the movie industry nearly bankrupt the company with the commercial failure of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. He currently runs his own game development company ...

Do you love Final Fantasy? Do you love it a lot?

Square Enix is searching for the ultimate Final Fantasy fan. The competition requires fans to submit a 30-60 second video showcasing why they deserve to be crowned the series' No. 1 Fan. And if that isn't enough, the winner will score themselves two tickets to the Distant Worlds concert in Paris (ooh la la!) as well as a copy of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. Not bad for a minute of effort, right? ...

There is a far fetched rumor going around that Squenix might be thinking about doing another Chrono game. It sounds mostly like a fan rumor caused by recent murmurings so it's most likely not true but it would be interesting none the less. Chrono Trigger was released in 1995 to critical and fan acclaim and was considered a nice send off of for the end of the 16-bit era. The story revolved around a group of teens accidentally discovering a way to time travel using a teleporter. When the teens discover that the world is going to be destroyed by an evil alien parasite in the future, the group start a fantastic journey through time to try and change the future. The game was designed by the Dream Team of Yuji Hori (Dragon Quest), Hironobu Sakaguchi (Final Fantasy, Blue Dragon), and Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball) and was the first time the two rival RPG powerhouse companies of Enix and Square would co-create a game. The game featured cutting edge 16-bit graphics, a unique battle system that involved combining ...

Have you ever played a Final Fantasy game and thought that it would make a pretty great book? Well dream no longer folks, because the first three Final Fantasy games look like they're set for novelization.

I wonder if the Invisible Lady will be featured...

This is a perfect opportunity for Square Enix's writing team to flex their creative muscles. FFI has long been the subject of entertaining Let's Plays, mostly due to its lack of characterisation and paperthin plot. With a novelization, Square Enix can stand to build upon the first gem in their crown and give us a somewhat familiar tale to enjoy. Let's not forget how good FFII and FFIII were either, though!

Square Enix has a habit of relegating these kinds of things to Japan-only, but here's hoping they make an appearance for Western audiences soon. In the mean time, better start asking your translator friends for some help!

To complement the giant box set of every game in the series, it looks like Square Enix will also be releasing new Ultimania guides for the series. It's reported that these Ultimania guides will feature even more rare and obscure information than the previous ones, including some never before seen art.

Square Enix plan to release three compilations; the first one covers the Nintendo era titles, the second covers the PS1 titles and the last book covers FFX-FFXIV. They'll set you back about ¥3,255 each ($42|£26|€32).

Final Fantasy Versus XIII Delays Inspire Fan Protest

So after years of little info, quick updates about future updates, rumors of being upgraded to being FFXV, and even rumors of the game being canceled, fans have started a petition to get SE to be transparent about the production of FF Versus XIII.

While the success of an online petition is rare, the most recent and notable exception being that of the Dark Souls petition that led to a DLC and PC port, this is another example of fans being upset with SE's curious PR campaign for the missing Versus XIII. Square has only released three videos, a few pictures, and name dropped about two characters and have given the most vague idea of what the game is about and how it plays. The title has been a no show for every major gaming expo and Squenix event since 2010. The game has been in development since 2006 and still has no release window. It entered full production last year.

Versus XIII Update: Square Enix Couldn't Possibly Be More Vague - PS3 News

So it appears that Squenix has reached a new level of bureaucracy concerning Versus XIII. Now we're getting updates on when we can expect more updates. Nomura's comment about getting this info soon, can either mean an E3 reveal, or more likely a Tokyo Game Show (TGS) reveal, or even possibly a future undisclosed Square Enix event, which is also not far fetched as the series turns 25 this year. ...

    Just something fun to do...

    1. VI is the first FF that allows the player to change who is in the party.

    2. In the early drafts, Terra was suppose to be a guy around the age of 21.

    3. While everyone knows VI has the largest cast, most don't ever mention it also has the largest number of Summons in the main series. 27 in the original version, and 31 in the GBA port.

    4. One of VI's main writers was Kaori Tanaka--or more commonly known as Soraya Saga; she wrote the characters of the Figaro Bros. as well as Relm and a few other members of the cast. She went on to write the plots of Xenogears and part of Xenosaga.

    5. VI is actually the first game to introduce a final boss with an Angel motif, Kefka's god mode having a total of six wings. Also, Heartless Angel (Fallen One in the Woosely script) makes its first appearance in this title.

    6. Terra has more Official Artwork than any other FF character in the series (20+)

Anyway else have their own silly trivia to add? ...
