The Tokyo Game Show has begun, and a new trailer has been released for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. Check it out!

Its not all gameplay footage like the last awesome trailer, and doesnt show a whole lot that's really new, which is kind of disappointing. But you can definitely see the massive new environments, the very fast-paced battle system, and, most importantly, chocobos!

For those of you eagerly awaiting information on the PS3 release: while we were originally promised more details during the TSG, it looks like that announcement will not be made until October. Well have more details as they become available. ...

Yoshi P and the gang did a live steam information session dubbed the Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary: FINAL FANTASY XIV Special Talk Session, giving players a chance to learn a little more about the upcoming Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. The hour-long clip is on Youtube already - and will be shown at the bottom of the article - but for the time poor, some of the major points will be summarised here for you!

Lead Battle Designer Akihiko Matsui wanted to remind everyone that A Realm Reborn was being rebuilt from the ground up - including the battle system. "It's completely different from the current system," he said. The changes in battle will mostly relate to TP and timers, however. In the current version of FFXIV, TP builds up by hitting things with the standard attack. But in A Realm Reborn, TP will function more like MP - characters will have a full bar at the start of a fight with it being depleted as the battle wears on. Abilities will still have similar timers to the current system, but spells (which use MP) and weaponskills (which use TP) will have ...

Its the weekend of the Penny Arcade Expo, and that means a lot of stuff is happening in the video game world. Earlier today, Square-Enix released a new trailer of gameplay footage for Final Fantasy XIV that shows off a new ability: Limit Breaks!

Did you see the mage at the end summoning the massive rock to drop on the dragon? How incredibly badass was that?

Limit Breaks are just one of the many planned new abilities and features for A Realm Reborn. This is not just an individual ability, but an entirely new feature that emphasizes group dynamics. A party can build up a shared group limit break by their collective actions, and utilize them for devastating results.

This video was first shown live at the 25th Anniversary event last night, where an SE rep held a brief content presentation on changes to FFXIV. This was supposed to be streamed, but I can only find this recording of it. Its fairly long, so Ill break down some highlights of the changes discussed (minus the Limit Break info discussed above):

Final Fantasy XIV Producer Naoki Yoshida released another letter today to discuss the game, focusing on the upcoming alpha test and grand finale for this version of FFXIV. For starters, Yoshida has assured us that this time, they plan to get things right:

The alpha test has yet to begin, and the beta is still a bit further down the track. This time around, we want to make sure were fully satisfied with the content before sending it out into the big, wide world. Beta wont start until Im 100% happy things are ready for that stage, and we wont go live with the final version until after weve had the chance to consider and implement feedback from the beta.
The development team will be looking for alpha testers soon, and they will put up a tester recruitment site with all of the details. Well be sure to update you when that goes live.

As for the grand finale of FFXIV 1.x, Yoshida informs us that the last save maintenance for current character data is scheduled for November 1, 2012, with the downtime of all Worlds starting ...

Final Fantasy XIV got a rocky start but has recently made waves on the 2.0 version or what they are calling " A Realm Reborn." Who knew they really did plan on ditching all the old to bring in the new.

A retailer posted on the NeoGaf forums that he was issued a field destroy on the original Final fantasy XIV games. They say the Rep for Square Enix told them they'd credit $16 for each game. If you don't know, Field Destroy means to physically get rid of the games in retail stores. When questioned, Square had this to say originally ignoring the rumor.

"We haven't announced pricing and launch time for the title yet. However, we have publicly stated that beta will begin at the end of this year."
When pressed further they released this statement:

"In anticipation of the upcoming Alpha and Beta tests for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, Square Enix, in coordination with our retail partners, has decided to discontinue sales of the current version of Final Fantasy XIV. This move was done

For those who don't know, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (aka Final Fantasy XIV 2.0) is basically a sequel to Final Fantasy XIV, but your character from Final Fantasy XIV (the original/current one) gets imported into the game and Final Fantasy XIV (original/current) will cease to exist. It is, in effect, a completely new game. It has a new graphics engine, new server system, new features, new battle system, new gathering system... all the stuff from the current game, such as storyline and maps? The story will be 'in the past', the maps will be completely redesigned.

Something big and bad is coming to Eorzea, and it will involve all characters being sent to a 'timeless zone' and then dropped back into the game in A Realm Reborn, to explore the new maps, the new storyline, ...

Outside of the whole screenshots and gameplay footage found in the other thread, there is a lot being said on the internets about what is being said at Gamescom. Expect some things to be lost in translation (Japanese to German to English to Occasional Poor Journalist Putting Words In People's Mouths to ...me!)...

- It is likely that FFXIV's existing players will be given priority placement in the beta for A Realm Reborn.
- It is likely that, eventually, FFXIV's existing players will be given the ability to transfer their current character into the beta.
- A Golden Saucer-like place is being worked on where people can gamble away all their gil (economy impact sounds high for that one!). This will not likely be available at launch.
- The new story will be "very Final Fantasy".
- They are continuing to work on how best to implement FFVI-styled Magitek Armour (and FFIII's Crystal Tower).
- The graphics are apparently "the best in MMORPG history" - something that I can imagine some people will put to the test...
- Summons ...

If you did or didn't know (probably did) Final Fantasy XIV has had, well, a rocky start. It came out in 2010, then they proceeded to fire all their devs that December and has since been trying to re-work itself into what they are calling Final Fantasy XIV Version 2.0. And it's about to beta itself up!

So to get everyone back into playing, Square-Enix is giving those who have spent the time in game, with all the recent patches and what not, something nifty and special through the Legacy Campaign. What special things, you may ask. How about permanently discounted subscription of $9.99 per month and a Chocobo mount when 2.0 releases! How do I get these things? Another valid question. The Legacy Campaign introduces benefits to subscribers active for 90 days (cumulative) or more between Jan 6th up until the launch of Version 2.0.

MMORPG.com recently interviewed Naoki Yoshida, one of the leading producers on the Final Fantasy XIV team, regarding the games future. This interview mainly regarding patch 1.21 (released earlier this month) and the upcoming re-launch, aka patch 2.0. The interview also covered upcoming developments in housing and Hamlet Defense, a planned feature involving cooperative strategy.

According to Yoshida, patch 1.21 is the final main step in the games development before the big relaunch, and that he is proud of the current developments. He claimed that players would have been much more satisfied had the game been in its current form on original release, though he admits that there is much more to do (mentioning a guild system).

While the player satisfaction issue may be true, it says a lot that it took over a year to get to that point. Still, it looks like there are a lot of major developments going on and that the re-launch will involve a much different and more polished game than ...

Song and dance are powerful tools. They can be used to express oneself, used to protest, used as a social activity and used as a career. And, where Final Fantasy is concerned, can be very versatile and valuable weapons. Today we look at the power of song and dance, tools used by Bards and Dancers to combat foes, enhance their allies strength and ultimately have a cracking good time while doing so. Lets take a look at these underrated classes, and some of the characters who embody the power and passion of a performance. Lets start with the humble bard, shall we?

Sing Me A Song, Piano Man
Bards are probably best known as the folk who sing tales of heroes and dragons and all sorts of fantastic legends. Thats true enough, but the bards of Final Fantasy do more than just tell tales; they live them. We have a broad line-up, so lets jump straight into it! The Onion Kids show off their bard outfits. Classy, ain't they?

The Onion Kids (III)
The original bards, the Onion Kids of Final Fantasy III receive the bard job from the Water Crystal. In the NES version of the game, the bard class is used purely to provide buffs to the party. However, in the DS remake, the bards can also damage enemies by using their Sing command, which changes depending on the harp equipped. In addition to harps, bards can also equip knives, though this limits the effectiveness of their Sing command.
Prince Edward of Damcyan. Monarch, Musician and, uhh, Lover.
Edward Chris von Muir (IV)
While the origins of the bard class lie with the Onion Kids of Final Fantasy III, this is perhaps the first sight that western audiences received of the bard class. Edward, also known as Gilbert and Gilbart in some lands, is the crown prince of Damcyan. As such, he ...

Oh man, Final Fantasy XIV. We all know that, despite being super pretty, stability and performance issues at launch lead to two extensions of the game's trial period, costing the company what we can assume would be oodles in subscription fees, and one can imagine how many other potential customers were put off from buying the game entirely. Maybe it's stating the obvious a little, but Square Enix's CEO, Yoichi Wada, when asked about the title today at a press conference in Tokyo, responded with "The Final Fantasy brand has been greatly damaged." [source]

And my heart breaks a little. I know many Americans get a little frowny at the mention the MMORPG Final Fantasy titles, not because they're bad games, but because they resent them for not being another one of the standalone games that they already love (and because most of them are already wrapped up in World of Warcraft, ugh), so to hear one of those rouge Final Fantasys may be doing damage to our beloved series is quite the bummer.

They're ...

It starts tonight. Not much else to say! Head over to the official site and you can download the client software installer before the whole thing goes live.

Square-Enix is changing things up with how they handle the different regions very soon, so make sure you pick the right region.

Update: The open beta is postponed because they came across 'critical bugs'. No new release is available right now, and the download of the installer will be suspended later today.
